Software Engineer (Infra)
Job description
About the role
You will design and implement the foundational infrastructure that powers Numeral's AI-native tax platform at global scale. You will own the core systems that ensure our services remain highly available, performant, and secure for thousands of customers. This role requires deep collaboration with product and data engineering teams to enable new features while maintaining operational rigor. You will lead critical architecture decisions that shape how data flows through our distributed systems. Your work will directly influence the reliability and scalability of the platform as transaction volumes and regulatory complexity grow. You will champion automation and infrastructure-as-code practices to streamline operations and reduce manual toil. This is a high-leverage position where your technical judgment will define the long-term robustness of our platform.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and build highly scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure to support critical APIs, services, and data pipelines.
- Lead infrastructure architecture decisions for performance, observability, and fault tolerance across the entire stack.
- Drive improvements in system reliability, monitoring, and incident response with a focus on minimizing customer impact.
- Collaborate closely with product, platform, and data engineering teams to enable rapid feature development without compromising stability.
- Automate infrastructure management through infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and container orchestration to increase efficiency.
- Champion best practices in operational excellence, disaster recovery, and distributed systems design across the engineering organization.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into robust technical infrastructure solutions.
- Optimize system performance and scalability to handle increasing transaction volumes and complex regulatory integrations.
- Implement and evolve observability tooling to provide deep insights into system behavior and end-to-end workflows.
- Mentor and influence engineering practices by sharing knowledge and promoting standards for infrastructure management.
- Ensure security and compliance controls are embedded within infrastructure components from the ground up.
- Evaluate and adopt new technologies that improve the efficiency, resilience, and scalability of our platform.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience building and scaling backend or infrastructure systems in high-growth environments.
- Proficiency in Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, and AWS (or equivalent cloud platforms) for designing and operating production systems.
- Experience managing containerized workloads using tools like Kubernetes, ECS, or similar orchestration platforms.
- Expertise in observability tooling (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry) and monitoring pipelines to maintain system health.
- Proven ability to design fault-tolerant, distributed systems at scale while balancing performance and cost.
- Strong debugging and performance optimization skills across the stack from application code to infrastructure layers.
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with experience partnering cross-functionally in a fast-paced setting.
- Startup mindset: Not scared of ambiguity and hungry for rapid growth in a dynamic environment.
- Intensity & Ownership: This is not a 9-5 - we're scaling rapidly and have a massive opportunity ahead of us that requires relentless ownership.
- Customer Obsession: You deeply care about the user experience and solving their problems with empathy and precision.
Nice to have
- Experience in payments, tax, accounting, or regulatory tech.
- Infrastructure or platform engineering background (e.g., CI/CD, observability).
- Experience scaling monolith-to-service architectures or event-driven systems.
- Familiarity with GraphQL, Kafka, Terraform, or container orchestration tools.
