About the role
You will own the design and implementation of services that power Xealth's EHR integrations and clinical workflows from end to end. This role requires you to apply solid computer science fundamentals to solve complex problems in distributed systems, data modeling, and API design within a healthcare context. You will architect integration solutions that move beyond simple data exchange to build scalable abstraction layers and reusable modules. You will ensure data accuracy, integrity, and HIPAA-compliant security through rigorous validation, monitoring, and observability practices. You will contribute to technical decisions and code reviews that raise the engineering bar across the entire team. You will partner with product managers and EHR specialists to translate clinical workflows into elegant, scalable software solutions.

What you'll do
- Architect and develop core backend services using TypeScript and Node.js to power EHR integrations and automate clinical workflows.
- Design and implement integration services leveraging HL7 v2, FHIR, and EHR-specific APIs to enable seamless data exchange.
- Collaborate with DevOps engineers to deploy and operate microservices in AWS using containerization and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes and ECS.
- Implement robust validation, monitoring, and observability mechanisms to ensure data quality, integrity, and HIPAA-compliant security.
- Lead technical discussions and contribute to system design decisions that elevate the engineering standards across the organization.
- Utilize AI-assisted coding tools like GitHub Copilot to streamline development, increase quality, and accelerate delivery cycles.
- Partner cross-functionally with product managers and EHR specialists to convert complex clinical requirements into reliable software solutions.
- Write clean, maintainable, and scalable code that supports the long-term evolution of Xealth's platform.
- Troubleshoot intricate issues across distributed services using logs, traces, and performance metrics to maintain high availability.
- Optimize integration pipelines to reduce latency and improve throughput in data-heavy healthcare environments.
- Define and enforce best practices for API design, error handling, and security across all integration layers.
- Support the continuous improvement of development processes to align with agile methodologies and rapid iteration goals.
- Mentor junior engineers on architectural patterns and integration challenges specific to the healthcare domain.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and assess their applicability to clinical data automation and interoperability.
Requirements
- Must have prior experience in a healthcare startup or health data integration platform with knowledge of FHIR, HL7, patient identity management or clinical data modeling.
- Must possess a deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, object-oriented design, concurrency, and distributed systems.
- Must have professional experience building production software systems using NodeJS and Typescript for at least 3 years.
- Must have hands-on experience designing and building RESTful or event-driven APIs.
- Must be comfortable working with distributed systems and have experience designing and scaling microservices using AWS, Kubernetes, or similar technologies.
- Must be proficient in diagnosing complex issues across distributed services using logs, traces, and performance metrics.
- Must be comfortable working in an agile startup environment, balancing quality with rapid iteration and changing requirements.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with both technical and clinical stakeholders to ensure solutions meet real-world needs.
- Must have a strong commitment to data accuracy, integrity, and security, with awareness of HIPAA compliance considerations.
- Must be detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-impact role.
- Must be self-driven and capable of owning complex projects from conception through production deployment.
- Must have experience collaborating within cross-functional teams to deliver integrated software solutions.
