This is a hands-on position for a builder who wants to construct the core technical architecture of an AI-first startup. You will be responsible for designing and deploying end-to-end intelligent systems, focusing on model orchestration, automated workflows, and agentic functionality. Your work will directly define the technical standards and infrastructure of our early-stage operation. Your daily responsibilities will involve designing, building, and managing production AI systems, including tool-calling agents and Retrieval-Augmented Generation implementations.

What you'll do
- Architect and deploy production-grade AI systems that handle complex tool-calling agent workflows and Retrieval-Augmented Generation pipelines.
- Design and implement scalable backend services and APIs using PostgreSQL and Redis to support real-time inference and internal tooling.
- Build and maintain integrations with third-party model providers and MCP servers using modern frameworks to ensure extensibility and reliability.
- Establish and enforce technical standards for workflow automation, creating robust observability and performance metrics for all services.
- Optimize system design for critical factors including latency, cost-efficiency, reliability, and the speed of product iteration.
- Collaborate closely with product, design, and data teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions that solve real customer problems.
- Develop and maintain frontend user interfaces using TypeScript and its associated ecosystem to ensure seamless user experiences.
- Shape engineering best practices, AI safety protocols, and the broader technical culture of the company through mentorship and code leadership.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact features in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift frequently.
- Contribute to the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept and architecture to deployment and ongoing optimization.
Requirements
- Bring 7+ years of experience building products in high-growth environments to demonstrate resilience and adaptability.
- Possess 2+ years of experience with Large Language Models in production settings to ensure practical implementation knowledge.
- Prove you are an avid user of advanced AI development tools to stay current with industry capabilities.
- Show fluency in backend technologies such as PostgreSQL and Redis, as well as cloud service platforms.
- Demonstrate frontend development experience, particularly with TypeScript and its associated ecosystem.
- Maintain a strong product sense that balances flexibility, performance, and delivery speed.
- Operate comfortably in dynamic, fast-paced settings where priorities change frequently without losing focus.
- Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across diverse teams to achieve shared objectives.
- Embrace ambiguity and exhibit ownership driven by rapid growth and a commitment to company success.
Nice to have
- Specific experience in payments, tax, accounting, or regulatory technology is highly relevant to the domain.
- Backgrounds in automation tools, such as workflow engines or internal platform development, provide valuable context.
- Knowledge of model orchestration frameworks and the practical use of vector databases is also a key asset for advanced implementation.
Practical notes
- Location for this role is New York with a hybrid work model.
- The engagement is full-time, with a base compensation of $180,000 plus equity.
