Product Designer
Job description
About the role
You are responsible for owning product outcomes rather than simple deliverables within the complex world of sales tax, VAT, GST, filings, and registrations. You collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and fellow designers to define ambiguous problems and translate them into coherent product solutions. Your work directly changes how finance and accounting teams operate on a daily basis, making difficult processes feel manageable. Design at Numeral is fundamentally AI-first and builder-led, leveraging large language models as a starting point for exploration. You utilize tools like Claude and Cursor to rapidly iterate on interactions and flows before refining them in Figma. Designers are expected to prototype early and test concepts with real customers, maintaining involvement through launch and ongoing adoption. The role specifically seeks designers energized by the intersection of AI tooling and rigorous product craft. Success requires turning systems-heavy, high-stakes tax complexity into experiences that feel remarkably straightforward to the end user.
What you'll do
You own product work end to end, moving from initial problem discovery through to launch and continuous iteration, impacting key business metrics. You partner with product managers and engineers to define problems, explore wide solution spaces, validate concepts quickly, and ship improvements that influence activation and retention. You focus on critical metrics including activation rates, time-to-first-filing, registration completion, and qualitative customer confidence reported by users. You stay involved throughout the entire product lifecycle, ensuring designs remain viable through engineering constraints and post-launch learning. You begin your thinking process inside an LLM, using it to deconstruct ambiguous tax workflows and clarify fuzzy requirements early. You leverage Claude to draft short PRDs and proactively surface potential edge cases like nexus thresholds, marketplace facilitator rules, exemption certificates, and retroactive registrations. This rapid alignment allows the team to make informed decisions quickly without getting stalled. You validate your assumptions through self-serve research, talking directly with controllers, AP leads, and founders across ecommerce, SaaS, and digital businesses. You run quick tests, treating research as a velocity tool that informs direction rather than a rigid gatekeeping process. You prototype interactions using AI tools, employing Cursor and Claude Code to build functional explorations against real product surfaces. You guide system structure, behavior, and UX quality while AI generates the initial code foundations. You actively partner with engineers to determine what is feasible and what should move into the product roadmap. You bring validated concepts into Figma to translate ideas into full state coverage and system alignment, ensuring production readiness. This includes designing for the long tail of tax-specific edge states, such as conflicting jurisdiction rules, filing error states, and complex amendment flows. You strive for the 80/20 balance, recognizing that tax holds enormous hidden complexity which you must simplify. You encode judgment under the hood, relying on the Minerva internal tax engine to handle heavy computational lifting. Simultaneously, you keep the default user experience simple, successful, and intuitive for the majority of customers. You contribute to the team's design culture by sharing reusable prompts, proven patterns, and key learnings from testing. You actively participate in design crits and reviews, raising the overall craft standard across the product design team.
Requirements
You have substantial experience as a product designer working on complex products, ideally within B2B, fintech, accounting, or other systems-heavy environments. You have led projects from initial problem definition all the way through launch and beyond, demonstrating ownership and follow-through. You currently and actively use LLMs like Claude or ChatGPT within your design workflow to augment your process and thinking. You feel comfortable working in tools like Cursor or Claude Code, even if you do not write production-level code by hand. Your portfolio clearly demonstrates strong product thinking, refined interaction design, and craft when dealing with dense, data-heavy user surfaces. You can collaborate effectively with product managers to define success metrics and adapt based on data and feedback. You communicate with clarity and empathy, enabling direct collaboration with engineers, product managers, and customers from diverse backgrounds. You possess the ability to break down complex information and explain design decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and making sound decisions when requirements are incomplete or constantly shifting. You understand the importance of building accessible and consistent user interfaces that serve a global audience. You are proactive in seeking feedback and iterating on your work based on constructive criticism from peers.
Nice to have
You have direct experience planning and conducting customer interviews or usability tests specifically with finance, accounting, or operations professionals. You possess a solid understanding of design systems and the challenges involved in extending shared components across products. You are comfortable with fundamental front-end concepts such as component states and conditional behaviors, allowing you to communicate effectively with engineering partners.
Practical notes
The role is based in New York with a hybrid arrangement, requiring some in-office days to foster collaboration and alignment. The position is full-time, with a competitive salary band of $140,000 to $220,000 USD per year and equity participation to align you with the company's long-term success.
