Frontend Engineer
Job description
About the role
Nelo is a (profitable) leading consumer fintech and e-commerce platform in Mexico, with >$500MM in annualized GMV and >$70MM in annualized revenue. Our mission is to increase consumers' buying power in Latin America, and we're doing so by building an AI-native platform powered by credit. The role is for a Frontend Engineer who will directly shape high-impact consumer products from concept to production. You will own the entire user-facing surface of the Nelo app, including onboarding, checkout, payments, and credit flows, working closely with design and founders without a frontend guild or rigid release train. This position requires a high tolerance for ambiguity, as you will help define what to build while being accountable for the full user experience and its business outcomes. You will ship experiments that move activation and conversion, using data the same week to validate your work and raise the quality bar for performance, reliability, and polish. Because every engineer uses agentic coding tools, this role offers the opportunity to leverage AI tools like Claude Code to cover the surface area of a larger team and push the team's practices forward.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own major surfaces of the Nelo app: onboarding, checkout, payments, and credit flows, from design partnership through production monitoring.
- Ship experiments that move activation and conversion, and read your own results in the data.
- Set the standard for performance, reliability, and polish in an app people trust with their money.
- Reduce frontend defects reaching production by building the testing and review practices you want to work within.
- Use Claude Code and other agentic tools as your default workflow, and push the team's practices forward as the tooling improves.
- Automate the repetitive parts of frontend work so your time goes to product judgment, not boilerplate.
- Work directly with design and the founders to iterate quickly and see the conversion impact of your work in the data the same week.
- Carry features from ambiguous idea to measured production impact as an owner of the consumer experience end to end.
- Be the person accountable for a surface, not just a slice of a ticket, and push back on designs when the flow is wrong.
- Contribute to an environment where engineering, design, and founders are in the same room to ship fast.
Requirements
- Engineering background with substantial time shipping consumer-facing frontend in production (mobile or web).
- Deep fluency in a modern frontend stack (React / React Native or equivalent) and the judgment to know when the framework is not the answer.
- Comfort owning outcomes end to end: you have carried features from ambiguous idea to measured production impact.
- Working proficiency in English (our engineering documentation and much of our communication is in English).
- You have worked on payments, checkout, or other money-moving flows.
- You use Claude Code or other agentic coding tools daily, or you are eager to make them your primary workflow.
- You want ownership of a surface, not a slice of one, and you are comfortable being the person accountable for it.
- You care about the difference between an app that works and an app that feels trustworthy enough to handle someone's money.
- You are able to work in-office in our Mexico City or New York City office.
- You are not interested in working with a large frontend team, because there are only 10 engineers total.
Nice to have
- Experience shipping consumer-facing mobile or web products at scale with specific metrics to show for it.
- Strong product judgment that leads you to push back on designs when the flow is wrong, not just implement them faithfully.
- A record of raising the quality bar for performance, reliability, and polish in production applications.
- Proven ability to reduce frontend defects through testing and review practices you advocate for.
- Familiarity with internal tooling such as Linear, Slack, Metabase, and experimentation stacks.
- Experience in fintech, e-commerce, or other regulated environments where trust is critical.
Practical notes
This role is based in our Mexico City or New York City office and requires in-office work, as the speed we ship at depends on engineers, design, and founders being in the same room. Remote work is not an option for this position. The team operates at a fast pace with approximately 70 people across both locations, and engineering is in-office in Roma Norte (Mexico City) or Tribeca (New York City). Every team at Nelo uses AI in daily workflows, and engineering is no exception, with Claude Code being standard issue. You will work with tools such as Linear, Slack, Metabase, and our internal experimentation stack to ship features that move real money and convert users. The environment is designed for individuals who thrive on ownership, data-driven decisions, and rapid iteration.
