About the role

Natera is actively seeking a Research Associate 1 to join the Oncology Research Use Only Histopathology team in San Carlos. In this capacity, you will be responsible for managing molecular biology experiments and NGS workflows with a primary focus on processing sensitive patient samples. The role demands a high degree of precision and strict adherence to established laboratory protocols to ensure the integrity of the results. You will operate within a regulated laboratory environment where compliance and accuracy are paramount to the research process. Ownership of daily experimental execution and meticulous documentation will be central to your contributions to the team. Your work will support the development of molecular diagnostics by ensuring that sample processing and data generation meet the highest quality standards. What you'll do

• Execute molecular biology protocols by handling laboratory specimens while following strict contamination prevention protocols to maintain sample integrity.
• Isolate plasma from whole blood samples and perform precise tissue dissections for both formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and fresh biological samples.
• Extract and purify high-quality DNA from a diverse array of biological sources using standardized extraction methodologies.
• Prepare next-generation sequencing libraries with accuracy and run sequencing procedures on iSeq, MiSeq i100, NovaSeq6000, and NovaSeqX platforms to generate data.
• Track samples meticulously using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and manage database queries to ensure proper chain of custody and data resolution.
• Perform scheduled maintenance on laboratory equipment, conduct preventive maintenance tasks, and troubleshoot malfunctions through a formal ticketing system to minimize downtime.
• Manage inventory levels for reagents and consumables, ensuring that supplies are stocked appropriately to support uninterrupted workflow.
• Collaborate with senior scientists to assist in the drafting, review, and updating of Standard Operating Procedures to reflect current best practices.
• Maintain detailed, accurate, and organized laboratory notebooks and records in strict compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) guidelines.
• Validate sample quality through rigorous QC processes, including electrophoresis and DNA quantification, to confirm suitability for downstream analysis.
• Operate NGS platforms with technical proficiency, ensuring that run parameters are optimized for high-quality data output.
• Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate workflow schedules and resolve logistical challenges related to sample processing.

Requirements

• Hold a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in a biological science or a closely related field.
• Possess 1 to 4 years of hands-on experience working in a molecular biology laboratory setting.
• Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental laboratory techniques such as pipetting, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), quantitative PCR (qPCR), and nucleic acid extraction.
• Have direct experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) library preparation and hands-on experience operating sequencing platforms.
• Exhibit the ability to work onsite in San Carlos with flexibility for shifted schedules, including early morning shifts from 7am to 4pm, late shifts from 11am to 8pm, or overnight shifts from 7pm to 3am.
• Show advanced competence in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to manipulate data, create formulas, and generate reports.
• Possess experience with sample quality control procedures, gel electrophoresis, and precise DNA quantification methods.

Nice to have

• Demonstrate advanced Excel skills, including the creation and management of pivot tables, the writing of macros, and the implementation of nested formulas to analyze complex datasets.
• Possess database querying capabilities to retrieve and manage information efficiently within laboratory information systems.

This position requires consistent onsite attendance at the San Carlos, Canada location. Compensation for this role is determined by individual skill set, relevant experience level, and applicable certifications.
