What you'll do
- Oversee and manage all legal matters related to the company's operations, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Develop, implement, and maintain legal policies and procedures that align with the company's objectives and mitigate legal risks.
- Provide legal advice and support to various departments, including HR, finance, and operations, on a range of issues such as contracts, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution.
- Review, draft, and negotiate contracts and agreements with clients, vendors, and partners to protect the company's interests.
- Collaborate with external legal counsel on complex legal matters and litigation, ensuring effective representation and resolution of disputes.
- Monitor changes in laws and regulations that may impact the company's operations and advise management on necessary adjustments.
- Conduct legal research and analysis to support decision-making processes and strategic planning.
- Train and educate staff on legal compliance and best practices, fostering a culture of awareness and accountability within the organization.
- Manage the legal department's budget and resources, ensuring efficient operations and cost-effective legal solutions.
- Prepare and present reports on legal matters to senior management and the board of directors, providing insights and recommendations.
- Participate in risk management initiatives, identifying potential legal risks and developing strategies to mitigate them.
- Foster strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners to facilitate effective communication and collaboration on legal issues.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and admission to the bar in California.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a legal management role, preferably within the logistics or transportation industry.
- Proven track record of managing complex legal issues and providing strategic legal advice to senior management.
- Strong knowledge of corporate law, contract law, and regulatory compliance, particularly in the logistics sector.
- Excellent negotiation, drafting, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in managing a team and fostering a collaborative work culture.
Nice to have
- Experience with international trade regulations and compliance.
- Familiarity with environmental laws and regulations affecting the logistics industry.
- Previous experience in a corporate legal department or as in-house counsel.
- Membership in relevant professional organizations, such as the American Bar Association or local bar associations.
- Multilingual skills, particularly in Spanish or Mandarin, are a plus.
Skills & tools
- Proficiency in legal research tools and databases, such as Westlaw or LexisNexis.
- Familiarity with contract management software and document management systems.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of compliance management systems and risk assessment tools.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
