About the role
MongoDB is expanding its Sydney team to develop intelligent tools that assist customers in modernizing their application codebases. The Application Modernisation Platform (AMP) facilitates the transition from traditional relational systems to scalable architectures built on MongoDB. The App Analysis & Modelling team plays a crucial role in this process by creating tools that analyze code and provide insights, enabling customers to understand their applications before they undergo transformation. You will own the design and implementation of core analysis engines that parse and interpret legacy application code to drive modernization efforts. You will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and performance of the models that underpin schema and technology recommendations. You will work closely with product teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions for complex data migration challenges. This role requires you to build reliable components that integrate seamlessly into the larger AMP ecosystem. You will be instrumental in defining the architectural patterns that allow the platform to scale with increasing customer demands. Your work will directly influence how customers perceive the value of migrating to modern database technologies.

What you'll do
- Engineer backend services using Python and Java to process and analyze large codebases efficiently.
- Construct data pipelines that ingest, transform, and store metadata extracted from diverse relational database schemas.
- Architect and deliver scalable APIs that serve analysis results to frontend applications and internal tools.
- Implement advanced algorithms for schema comparison and recommendation to support automated refactoring.
- Perform detailed code reviews to ensure adherence to best practices, security standards, and performance benchmarks.
- Collaborate with designers to iterate on user interfaces that present complex technical data in an intuitive manner.
- Diagnose and resolve intricate issues that span the backend services, data layers, and client-side components.
- Optimize query performance and data models to handle the complexity of real-world enterprise applications.
- Integrate new features into the continuous integration and delivery pipeline to maintain high software quality.
- Write and maintain comprehensive tests that validate the correctness of the analysis and modelling logic.
- Document technical designs and implementation details to support knowledge sharing across the team.
- Partner with product management to prioritize features that deliver the highest customer value in each release cycle.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing guidance on coding standards, debugging techniques, and architectural decisions.
- Explore emerging technologies to assess their potential for enhancing the capabilities of the Application Modernisation Platform.
Requirements
- Bring a minimum of 3 years of professional software development experience with strong skills in Python and/or Java.
- Demonstrate proven experience in designing and developing scalable, high-performance APIs and backend services.
- Show a strong understanding of relational data modeling and SQL, including experience with systems such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
- Exhibit a solid grasp of algorithms, data structures, and their associated time and space complexities.
- Possess experience with frontend technologies, particularly React and TypeScript, or a demonstrated willingness to work across the full stack.
- Hold a degree in Computer Science or a related field, or have equivalent practical experience that validates your technical abilities.
- Maintain a curious mindset, a positive attitude, and a commitment to continuous learning in a rapidly evolving technical landscape.
- Communicate effectively using strong verbal and written skills to articulate technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Experience in developing AI-driven features, including familiarity with Large Language Models (LLMs) and agentic workflows.
- Background in code analysis, static analysis tools, or creating tools that programmatically interpret code structures.
- Knowledge of MongoDB and its ecosystem for document-based data storage and management.
- Experience with cloud-native distributed systems, such as Kubernetes, for deploying and managing scalable services.
- Contributions to open-source projects that demonstrate your ability to collaborate on complex codebases.
