About the role

Join the MongoDB Server Query Execution team to enhance our distributed open-source database. Your contributions will be essential in optimizing the performance and efficiency of data processing within MongoDB. You will work on transforming logical query plans into actionable execution, developing physical operators for data handling, and improving runtime for various workloads, including analytical and transactional tasks.

What you'll do

• Define and implement a 12-month roadmap for Query Execution by analyzing advanced systems and applying your expertise in industry trends.
• Take ownership of long-term objectives (6-18 months) to innovate high-performance query execution, coordinating strategies and writing well-tested C++ code for production.
• Provide guidance to management on architectural and process-related decisions while collaborating with various stakeholders on significant initiatives.
• Mentor and support team members through coaching and knowledge sharing, fostering talent development through interviews and guidance.

Requirements

• Over 10 years of professional experience in query engine development or database internals.
• Proven experience in creating production-level code for a large user base with strong design principles and code quality standards.
• A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience, with a solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture.
• Familiarity with large code bases in C++ or a similar systems programming language, including skills in debugging, estimating complexity, and designing integration strategies.
• Demonstrated technical leadership with a history of defining and guiding component roadmaps over the medium term.
• A strong interest in both the theoretical and practical aspects of database query engines, with relevant hands-on or academic experience in the database field.

Success Measures

• Within three months, you will have contributed to a project for the next major version and resolved several bugs in a minor version of our latest stable release, gaining insight into MongoDB's project lifecycle and long-term objectives.
• By the six-month mark, you will have taken on code review duties and actively participated in designing new features, broadening the team's knowledge through presentations on relevant papers or architectures.
• After twelve months, you will have utilized your extensive experience to shape the long-term technical roadmap for the MongoDB Query team by directly managing a component-level roadmap.

MongoDB's base salary range for this position is as follows: $151,000 - $297,000 USD. Compensation is tailored to each candidate based on various factors, including skills, experience, qualifications, and location. Salary is part of a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, which may include equity, participation in the employee stock purchase program, flexible paid time off, 20 weeks of fully-paid gender-neutral parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, a 401(k) plan, mental health counseling, and health benefits.
