Senior Software Engineer, Observability
Job description
About the role
The MongoDB Customer Observability Team is a collaborative group focused on assisting users in managing MongoDB at a global scale. This team oversees MongoDB Atlas, our rapidly expanding database-as-a-service product, enabling users to deploy MongoDB clusters across various locations in a matter of minutes. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join us in addressing challenges in the Observability domain. The role centers on crafting robust solutions that provide clarity into distributed systems and ensuring high reliability. You will be instrumental in shaping the diagnostic capabilities that empower both customers and internal stakeholders. This position demands a balance of technical depth and cross-functional communication. You will work on initiatives that directly impact the user experience of a global platform. Success in this role will be measured by the stability and insight delivered to the observability stack.

- Architect and implement observability features using modern instrumentation techniques to capture system-wide telemetry.
- Lead the design of intricate technical projects that bridge the gap between backend performance and frontend visibility.
- Dissect large-scale distributed production challenges by correlating logs, metrics, and traces to identify root causes.
- Partner with cross-functional team members to enhance our codebase and establish best practices for maintainability.
- Collaborate directly with customers and support engineers to resolve complex issues and participate in our on-call rotation for critical incidents.
- Guide the technical direction of the observability stack through code reviews and architectural proposals.
- Mentor junior engineers on the team, fostering a culture of learning and knowledge sharing.
- Optimize data pipelines to ensure that observability data is processed efficiently at scale.
- Define and refine service level indicators to align product behavior with customer expectations.
- Evaluate emerging tools in the observability space to determine their applicability to our infrastructure.
Requirements
- Bring a minimum of 5 years of experience in backend or full stack engineering to the table.
- Demonstrate that you are a strong team player who values collaboration and collective problem-solving.
- Engage in discussions as someone who is approachable, inquisitive, and honest about trade-offs and challenges.
- Apply backend development experience with a compiled language such as Java, C#, or Go to build reliable services.
- Prove your ability in designing and architecting modern, scalable web applications that handle growth gracefully.
- Show skill in diagnosing complex problems within distributed systems and database operations under pressure.
- Commit to continuous learning and staying updated with new technologies to keep the observability strategy current.
- Exhibit proficiency in debugging and resolving production issues with a methodical and calm approach.
- Maintain a solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and their complexities to inform efficient solutions.
- Adhere to security and compliance standards relevant to handling observability data in a multi-tenant environment.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with distributed event streaming platforms like Kafka or WarpStream, or event processing platforms such as Flink.
- Experience in developing observability tools for code to automate the detection of anomalies.
- Background in TypeScript, React, and Node.js, especially in managing an ecosystem of dependencies.
- Understanding of database internals and optimization techniques, particularly indexing, to improve query performance insights.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in backend development languages (Java, C#, Go, etc.) to construct resilient backend components.
- Experience with distributed systems and observability tools to monitor and analyze system health.
- Familiarity with web application design and architecture to ensure seamless integration of monitoring features.
