About the role
The MongoDB Query Execution Team is on the lookout for skilled software engineers to elevate our distributed query system. This role will involve crafting execution algorithms, optimizing database performance, and introducing new functionalities to our query language, all of which play a crucial role in enhancing our customers' experiences.

What you'll do
- Assess and refine the current capabilities of the MongoDB query engine to ensure optimal performance.
- Develop high-quality C++ code while actively participating in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback to enhance team output.
- Design, implement, test, and support innovative features that aim to boost query performance, enrich the query language, troubleshoot performance challenges, and ensure smooth integration with other tools and products.
- Collaborate with team members to deliver technical solutions that meet high standards of quality.
- Engage in troubleshooting and diagnosing performance issues within the query execution framework.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in database technologies and incorporate relevant innovations into your work.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions regarding project planning and execution strategies.
- Mentor junior team members, sharing knowledge and best practices to foster a collaborative learning environment.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in systems programming is essential.
- Familiarity with databases or data management systems is a plus, though not strictly required.
- Demonstrated experience in creating industrial-grade software solutions.
- A solid grounding in computer science fundamentals, particularly in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture principles.
- Experience with large codebases, preferably in C++, C, Rust, or another compiled programming language.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience in the field.
- A keen interest in database query engines, with hands-on experience or an advanced degree (M.Sc./Ph.D.) being advantageous.
Success Measures
- Within the first three months, you will have made contributions to a project slated for the next major release and addressed several bugs in a minor version of our latest stable series.
- By the six-month mark, you will have assumed code review responsibilities and will be independently delivering complex features while resolving bugs.
- After a year, you will be leading the development of a significant new feature and mentoring newer team members to ensure their growth and integration into the team.
