About the role
The Infrastructure Engineering team at MongoDB is responsible for developing and maintaining an internal platform that empowers engineering teams to effectively deploy and manage their production services. In this position, you will work closely with various engineering groups to assess their infrastructure needs and workflows. Your focus will be on creating self-service platform tools and improving developer productivity through automation and educational initiatives.

What you'll do
- Collaborate with diverse engineering teams to pinpoint deficiencies in existing development workflows and gather new infrastructure requirements.
- Design and implement self-service platform services and developer tools that emphasize reliability and user-friendliness while simplifying the complexities of cloud infrastructure.
- Regularly write and review automation scripts, configuration management, and application code to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Develop and assess functional specifications and scoping documents for major platform projects and services.
- Oversee and manage a significant portion of MongoDB's internal development platform, ensuring its smooth operation.
- Work with a distributed team, coordinating efforts with remote engineers across various time zones, including PST, EST, GMT, and IST.
- Engage in continuous improvement of platform services by soliciting feedback from users and implementing enhancements based on their input.
- Participate in design reviews and provide mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.
- Monitor and optimize the performance of the internal development platform, addressing any issues that arise promptly.
- Contribute to the development of best practices and documentation for platform usage and maintenance.
- Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure MongoDB remains at the forefront of innovation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align platform capabilities with business objectives and engineering needs.
Requirements
- Proven experience in building and managing large-scale distributed systems, ideally within an AWS environment.
- Strong backend programming skills, with a preference for proficiency in Go; substantial experience in another compiled or strongly-typed language is also acceptable.
- Familiarity with AI coding agents and the ability to create high-quality context for optimal outputs.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and executing medium to large software projects, including leading design reviews and mentoring junior engineers.
- A detail-oriented, pragmatic, self-motivated, and collaborative approach to work.
- Extensive experience managing production Kubernetes clusters, going beyond basic deployment tasks.
- Practical knowledge of defining and operating against Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for services you own.
- Proficient in observability tools, including metrics, logging, traces, Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry.
- Strong understanding of Linux and TCP/IP networking principles.
- Familiarity with standard authentication protocols such as OAuth and OIDC.
- Experience with web services and/or development of Kubernetes controllers.
- Proficient in utilizing CI/CD workflows for deploying production services effectively.
Nice to have
- Experience with cloud-native application development and deployment strategies.
- Familiarity with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments.
