About the role
Melio is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the financial command center for small businesses. You will work on integrating our payment platform with Xero to create a unified ecosystem for millions of users. In this capacity, you will be responsible for shaping the technical foundation that powers critical financial workflows. The role requires deep collaboration with cross-functional partners to ensure that backend systems meet stringent reliability and compliance standards. You will contribute to strategic discussions that define the long-term vision for our platform's scalability. Your work will directly impact how small businesses manage their cash flow and vendor relationships on a global scale. What you'll do
- Architect and implement backend services using TypeScript and Node.js to support high-throughput payment processing.
- Design and maintain resilient cloud infrastructure on AWS Serverless, leveraging SAM CLI and CloudFormation for deployment automation.
- Develop and optimize APIs that enable seamless data synchronization between payment systems and accounting platforms like Xero.
- Lead the management of real-time payment processing pipelines to ensure data integrity and transaction consistency.
- Evaluate and select appropriate relational and document databases to meet evolving performance and scalability requirements.
- Conduct code reviews and technical design sessions to uphold software quality and team knowledge sharing.
- Partner with product and design teams to translate business requirements into robust backend specifications.
- Troubleshoot complex production incidents by analyzing logs, metrics, and distributed traces under pressure.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing guidance on best practices for secure and maintainable serverless applications.
- Drive the adoption of new technologies and techniques that improve development velocity and system reliability.
- Own end-to-end implementation of features, from initial design and coding through testing and production deployment.
- Build and maintain systems that process over $100B in annual payments with a focus on security and compliance.
- Influence product direction by contributing insights on technical constraints and opportunities during planning discussions.
- Ensure that all integrations, including those with external accounting ecosystems, remain performant and scalable.
Requirements
- Bring a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in software engineering, with a strong emphasis on architecture and design.
- Demonstrate practical experience managing microservices and cloud-based production environments in a financial context.
- Show consistent ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment while communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Exhibit a strong desire to learn new technologies and step outside of your comfort zone to solve challenging problems.
- Hold a solid understanding of distributed systems principles and how they apply to high-scale transaction processing.
- Have hands-on experience with infrastructure as code, particularly using AWS Serverless frameworks and CloudFormation templates.
- Display strong ownership and accountability for delivery, even when working under tight deadlines and evolving requirements.
- Commit to maintaining high standards for code quality, testing, and documentation across the engineering organization.
