Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates for mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and piping, based on project specifications and requirements.
- Analyze project blueprints and specifications to identify key components and materials necessary for accurate estimation.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to gather relevant data and ensure all aspects of the project are considered in the estimation process.
- Prepare detailed bid proposals that outline costs, timelines, and project deliverables, ensuring clarity and transparency for clients.
- Conduct market research to stay informed about current material costs, labor rates, and industry trends that may impact project budgets.
- Review and analyze historical data from previous projects to improve the accuracy of future estimates and identify potential cost-saving opportunities.
- Assist in the preparation of change orders and cost proposals for additional work, ensuring that all modifications are documented and communicated effectively.
- Participate in project meetings and presentations to discuss estimates with clients and stakeholders, addressing any questions or concerns they may have.
- Maintain organized records of all estimates, bids, and related documentation for future reference and auditing purposes.
- Continuously seek opportunities for professional development and training to enhance estimating skills and knowledge of mechanical systems.
- Support the project management team in tracking project costs and budgets throughout the project lifecycle, providing updates as necessary.
- Foster strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and reliable service for project materials and labor.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical estimating or a similar role within the construction or engineering industry.
- Proficiency in estimation software and tools, such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or similar applications.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications accurately.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a strong commitment to accuracy and quality in all estimations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Familiarity with local building codes, regulations, and industry standards relevant to mechanical systems.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain comprehensive documentation and records of estimates and bids.
Nice to have
- Professional certification in estimating, such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or similar credentials.
- Experience with project management software, such as Procore or Microsoft Project.
- Knowledge of sustainable building practices and energy-efficient systems.
- Previous experience working in a fast-paced construction environment with tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with contract negotiation and procurement processes.
