About the role
May Mobility is seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Engineer II to take a leading role in the development, validation, and continuous improvement of autonomous vehicle capabilities. This position requires translating high-level autonomy objectives into detailed, actionable system requirements, overseeing testing procedures, and ensuring that all systems meet safety, regulatory, and performance standards. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop simulation and testing strategies, analyze real-world and simulated data, and drive engineering initiatives that enhance the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicle systems. This role is integral to supporting May Mobility's mission to deliver safe, reliable, and scalable autonomous mobility solutions.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop comprehensive system and capability requirements based on project goals, ensuring full traceability from initial concept through to validation and deployment.
- Analyze Operational Design Domains (ODD) and route data to inform the development of autonomous vehicle driving capabilities, ensuring the vehicle can operate safely across various environments.
- Design, review, and validate testing scenarios to ensure they meet industry standards such as Euro NCAP and NHTSA, as well as internal safety and performance benchmarks.
- Manage and oversee the driving simulation portfolio, ensuring that simulation scenarios cover all relevant ODDs and support validation efforts effectively.
- Create detailed on-road and logical test scenarios that evaluate the vehicle's autonomy features, system robustness, and safety performance under diverse conditions.
- Review real-world field events to identify gaps in existing simulation scenarios, and develop new, representative tests to improve validation coverage.
- Define simulation specifications and requirements for cross-functional teams, enabling them to develop, execute, and analyze tests efficiently.
- Analyze data collected from real-world testing and simulations to identify performance trends, system deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Lead initiatives aimed at process improvement within the engineering team, fostering collaboration across departments to implement best practices and enhance validation workflows.
- Collaborate with software, hardware, and validation teams to ensure that system requirements are aligned with overall project objectives and safety standards.
- Support the integration of new capabilities into the autonomous system, ensuring they are validated thoroughly through simulation and on-road testing.
- Contribute to the development of safety cases and documentation required for regulatory approval and industry certification processes.
- Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, and project planning to ensure engineering efforts are aligned with company goals.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers, sharing expertise in systems engineering, simulation, and validation processes.
- Stay current with industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices in autonomous vehicle development to continuously improve validation strategies.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in automotive systems engineering, with a focus on software, hardware, or integrated hardware/software products.
- At least 3 years of experience specifically in systems engineering related to autonomous driving, advanced driver assistance systems, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of automotive and autonomous vehicle technologies, including sensors, perception, planning, and control systems.
- Proven experience developing behavioral simulations for autonomous vehicle or ADAS functionalities.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and experience with SQL and data analysis tools like Pandas, NumPy, or Spark.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and derive actionable insights.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a focus on safety and reliability.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with automotive safety standards such as ISO 26262, SOTIF, and HARA is a plus.
- Experience working in cross-functional teams, collaborating with software, hardware, validation, and safety teams.
Nice to have
- Master's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- Experience working in a startup environment, demonstrating agility and innovation.
- Knowledge of functional safety principles, including ISO 26262, SOTIF, and HARA.
- Familiarity with industry certification processes and regulatory requirements for autonomous vehicles.
- Experience with simulation tools beyond basic scenarios, such as CARLA, PreScan, or similar platforms.
- Background in vehicle testing, validation, or certification processes.
