You will oversee the full lifecycle of global tax compliance for Mapbox, managing complex filings across multiple jurisdictions while ensuring accuracy and regulatory adherence. This role requires a self-starter who excels in a fast-paced, collaborative setting and takes ownership of technical tax challenges without direct personnel management. You will serve as a key strategic partner to cross-functional teams, translating intricate tax regulations into practical business solutions. What you'll do
- Assume end-to-end responsibility for income tax, sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, franchise tax, value added tax, business tax, and licenses, as well as property tax returns and filings.
- Lead the annual tax provision process by coordinating with external advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Architect and maintain the tax calendar to guarantee strict adherence to filing deadlines and compliance obligations across all relevant jurisdictions.
- Act as the primary liaison during government tax audits, handling notices, inquiries, and formal requests with precision and professionalism.
- Partner with finance leadership to review quarterly transfer pricing calculations and associated journal entries for consistency and compliance.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of tax planning opportunities and the income tax implications arising from non-standard transactions and cross-functional initiatives.
- Prepare detailed apportionment analyses necessary for state income tax calculations, ensuring data accuracy and methodological soundness.
- Execute comprehensive tax account analysis and month-end reconciliations to maintain the integrity of all tax-related ledger accounts.
- Draft precise tax footnotes and detailed financial disclosures that meet accounting standards and regulatory expectations.
- Stay current on new tax legislation and accounting rules, assessing and documenting their potential impact on the business.
- Monitor corporate income tax and sales & use tax nexus continuously to identify risks and opportunities in operating locations.
- Facilitate corporate entity compliance by managing U.S. and international registrations, including the formation of new entities as needed.
- Provide expert tax guidance to the sales and legal teams during contract negotiations, clarifying tax consequences and structuring implications.
- Manage all third-party software relationships related to indirect sales tax, including platforms such as Avalara and Stripe, to ensure optimal functionality.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in accounting as a non-negotiable prerequisite for this position.
- Possess a Master's degree in taxation, which is strongly preferred and adds significant value to the role.
- Maintain active CPA certification or be actively engaged in the examination and licensing process.
- Bring a minimum of 6 to 10 years of progressive tax experience, with software proficiency being a distinct advantage.
- Demonstrate expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, specifically utilizing functions like VLOOKUP and constructing complex pivot tables.
- Show prior experience with NetSuite, Avalara, and Stripe, as these tools are integral to the tax workflow.
- Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills to convey complex tax concepts to diverse audiences.
- Possess highly developed interpersonal, organizational, and time management abilities to thrive in a dynamic environment.
- Function as a detail-oriented analytical thinker capable of managing multiple priorities while maintaining an unwavering focus on accuracy.
- Be a dependable self-starter with robust problem-solving skills and the capacity to operate effectively with minimal direct supervision.
Nice to have
- Experience with Netsuite, Avalara, and Stripe is a plus.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUP and pivot tables).
Practical notes
Compensation for this role ranges from $131,325 to $170,000 for most U.S. locations, with a 5% to 10% premium applied to positions in U.S. locations with a higher cost of labor. The final job level and actual compensation will be determined based on individual qualifications, including skills, prior relevant experience, potential impact, and scope of responsibility, as objectively assessed through the interview process.
