Senior/Staff Software Development Engineer, EV Platform
Job description
About the role
Mapbox is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the EV Platform team in Mapbox Japan, where you will own the design and execution of the data infrastructure that powers electric vehicle navigation experiences globally. You will architect and operate the ingestion pipelines that collect charging station data from hundreds of charge point operators, implement the quality systems that ensure reliability and freshness, and build the APIs that deliver this data to millions of developers in production. This role demands deep expertise in Rust and distributed systems to create scalable, resilient services that handle real-time data at global scale. You will run experiments to validate data accuracy, participate in end-to-end feature delivery, and collaborate closely with product owners and partner teams to define the future of the EV data platform. Your work will be high visibility, directly impacting navigation, search, and routing experiences used by organizations worldwide.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and implement scalable data pipelines and backend services in Rust, ensuring deployment best practices for resilience and observability within Mapbox's production environment.
- Build and operate the ingestion pipeline that processes real-time and static EV charging data from a global network of charge point operators and third-party aggregators.
- Create data quality and validation systems that reconcile and unify charging station attributes across multiple providers into a single authoritative dataset.
- Develop internal tooling and dashboards to monitor data health, surface anomalies, and track correction workflows across the EV data lifecycle.
- Support downstream Mapbox product teams by delivering reliable EV charging data through APIs and SDKs used in navigation and location-aware experiences.
- Run experiments to evaluate coverage, accuracy, and freshness of EV charging data, analyzing results to drive improvements in pipeline reliability and data correctness.
- Participate in end-to-end feature implementation within the larger Mapbox ecosystem, reviewing code, designing systems, shepherding releases, and engaging in on-call rotation.
- Collaborate with product owners, partner teams, and management to prioritize data platform initiatives and define long-term strategy for global EV coverage.
- Implement automated tests and monitoring to ensure service-level objectives are met and operational incidents are triaged efficiently using tools such as Datadog and Argo.
- Stay current with advancements in data engineering, distributed systems, and AI-assisted development to continuously improve the performance and quality of the EV data platform.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing within the team, documenting systems, processes, and architectural decisions to support long-term maintainability.
- Advocate for best practices in security, privacy compliance, and performance optimization as data flows through Mapbox's global infrastructure.
- Mentor and guide engineers across the organization on data pipeline design, quality validation techniques, and scalable backend patterns.
- Evaluate new data sources and third-party integrations, assessing feasibility, cost, and impact on existing systems before onboarding.
Requirements
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in Rust with a minimum of 3 years of production experience building backend services that operate at scale.
- Bring experience building highly available backend services and data pipelines in container-based environments on AWS, including hands-on work with Docker, ECS, Fargate, or Kubernetes.
- Show familiarity with service monitoring, incident triage, and continuous product improvement, using tools such as Argo and Datadog or equivalent platforms.
- Prove knowledge of data engineering concepts, including pipeline design, data quality validation, and large-scale data processing strategies.
- Exhibit understanding of distributed systems principles such as fault tolerance, consistency, and service discovery in real-world deployments.
- Display system architecture experience and the ability to analyze service performance, applying data-driven insights to drive improvements.
- Confirm enthusiasm for learning, knowledge sharing, and collaboration within a diverse, cross-functional team environment.
- Commit to communicating effectively in English, enabling clear collaboration with product owners, partner teams, and engineering peers across regions.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with EV charging data standards, CPO APIs, and the global electric mobility ecosystem.
- Experience building or operating data platforms that integrate multiple third-party data sources and reconcile conflicting datasets.
- Knowledge of Mapbox products, SDKs, and APIs, and prior work integrating location data into navigation or routing applications.
- Exposure to AI-assisted development tools and practices for integrating AI into engineering workflows and decision-making.
