About the role
You will own the end-to-end quality and architecture of critical Rider flows in the Lyft application, directly shaping the experience for millions of daily users. In this role, you will define the long-term technical roadmap for the Rider App group and drive the implementation of scalable, reliable, and pixel-perfect features. You will solve complex real-time data transfer and synchronization challenges while mentoring engineers across the group to elevate code standards and design practices. This position requires you to influence platform decisions, coach teams, and ensure safe, rapid releases through excellent development practices. You will continuously evaluate and adopt new technologies to maximize developer efficiency and product excellence.

What you'll do
- Work across our product teams to design, build, and release exciting features and products in the Lyft Rider application, used by millions of people every day
- Define long term roadmap and architecture based on technology and our needs
- Oversee major changes to our Android architecture and ensure platform consistency
- Work with Product Managers, Designers, and other Engineers to deliver best in class user experience and collaborate closely with local and global colleagues
- Continuously discover, evaluate and implement new technologies to maximize developer efficiency
- Mentor and support other developers on your team with code reviews, design feedback, and advice and guidance
- Solve complex real-time data transfer and synchronization issues across distributed systems
- Implement pixel perfect designs with advanced interactions, which are a joy to use and maintain performance
- Ensure robust testability, scalability, and reliability of features before shipping to production
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to align on priorities and delivery timelines
- Drive best practices in code quality, modularization, and maintainability across the codebase
- Lead incident response and postmortems to improve system stability and developer tooling
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience as an Android developer with a strong track record of delivering production-grade applications
- Experience with leading a technical team is a bonus and demonstrates impact beyond individual contribution
- Advanced knowledge of Java and Kotlin with a deep understanding of their nuances and interoperability
- Familiarity with RxJava and modern reactive programming patterns for managing asynchronous data streams
- Very knowledgeable about architecture and design patterns to build scalable and testable systems
- Worked on and shipped large scale Android applications that handle high traffic and complex user flows
- Great product sense; you care about usability, accessibility, and good design that delights users
- Has worked collaboratively with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams to build complex products under tight deadlines
- Strong understanding of Android framework, threading models, and performance optimization techniques
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks to ensure high code quality
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Commitment to inclusive design and adherence to platform guidelines to ensure consistent user experiences
Nice to have
- Contributions to open source projects related to mobile development or transportation domains
- Experience with emerging technologies such as Jetpack Compose for modern UI development
- Knowledge of backend systems and API integration to streamline frontend workflows
- Familiarity with analytics and monitoring tools to drive data-informed product decisions
Practical notes
This role follows a hybrid schedule, with team members expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Lyft considers working in the office at least 3 days per week to be an essential function of this hybrid role. You will have the flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year. The expected base pay range for this position in the San Francisco area is $176,000 - $220,000, not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus, or benefits. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
