Senior Software Engineer II
Job description
About the role
You architect and own the core backend systems that power Life360's experimentation and machine learning intelligence. You design and implement the high-throughput data pipelines and low-latency serving infrastructure that turns raw signals into personalized member experiences. You define and evangelize the AI-native backend engineering playbooks that shape how the entire engineering organization writes, reviews, and operates code. You partner closely with product and data science to iterate on features that scale to millions of families with real-time precision. You are responsible for the reliability, performance, and security of systems where an experimental misconfiguration can impact millions within hours. You lead the design of our feature store, online serving paths, and alerting frameworks to ensure experiments run safely and measure true impact. In your first year, you will ship meaningful improvements to the experimentation platform and establish workflows that demonstrate higher velocity than a non-AI-native engineer in a comparable role.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and implement the data pipelines and feature infrastructure that power Life360's experimentation and recommendation systems.
Build and maintain low-latency serving services that ensure experiments and ML models perform reliably at consumer internet scale.
Develop monitoring, alerting, and observability systems that protect member experience and surface issues before they escalate.
Design the architecture for high-throughput experimental systems where milliseconds matter and misconfigurations have broad impact.
Evolve the AI-native engineering workflows, including code generation, standups, and team velocity strategies powered by intelligent tooling.
Partner with product and data science teams to translate business questions into measurable experiments and production-grade services.
Publish and maintain backend engineering playbooks that standardize AI-assisted development across the organization.
Own the reliability and safety of experimentation platforms, ensuring rigorous validation before member-facing changes reach production.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to prioritize technical investments that enable faster, safer, and more personalized member experiences.
Lead the design of online serving paths and feature stores that support real-time personalization at massive scale.
Drive the adoption of agentic workflows, treating AI as a first-class collaborator throughout the software development lifecycle.
Champion best practices for secure, scalable, and maintainable backend systems across the Life360 engineering org.
Translate complex product requirements into robust backend services that balance performance, correctness, and time-to-market.
Guide junior engineers and engineers of different levels through code reviews, design discussions, and career growth in an AI-first environment.
Requirements
You have 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record of delivering complex backend systems.
You possess a deep understanding of distributed systems principles and have built services that operate at scale in production environments.
You are proficient in one or more backend programming languages such as Java, Go, Python, or TypeScript, with demonstrated ability to write high-performance, maintainable code.
You have hands-on experience designing and operating data pipelines, event-driven architectures, and real-time processing systems.
You have worked with databases and data stores at scale, including relational, NoSQL, and analytical databases used for experimentation and analytics.
You understand containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, and you have managed services in cloud environments like AWS, GCP, or Azure.
You have a strong grasp of monitoring, logging, and alerting practices, and you have used tools to ensure high service reliability and fast incident response.
You are comfortable making technical decisions in ambiguous situations and communicating tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Experience contributing to open source projects relevant to data pipelines, experimentation, or machine learning infrastructure.
Background working with AI-native development workflows, including the use of AI-assisted coding tools in a professional engineering environment.
Practical notes
This is a full-time remote role open to candidates in the United States and Canada.
Life360 is a remote-first company, and this position can be performed remotely regardless of the location listed.
Compensation varies by location and is determined based on candidate background, experience, knowledge, skills, and location.
Title accommodations are made in Canada, where the role will be listed as Developer instead of Engineer.
