Senior Quality Engineer
Job description
About the role
The is responsible for defining and executing the mobile quality strategy that underpins the reliability of our flagship products. You will own the test pyramid for our React Native application, Zable, determining the precise balance between end-to-end, integration, and unit testing to maximize return on investment. This role requires you to make deliberate, data-informed trade-offs regarding coverage, stability, and execution speed to ensure every release meets our high standards. You will establish the definitive quality gates that determine whether a build is ready to ship, protecting both our users and our brand reputation. A core part of this position involves building and maintaining a robust suite of automated E2E tests using Maestro, managing the entire lifecycle from initial scaffolding to clear reporting and diagnostics. You will work closely with engineering and product teams during the specification phase to practice shift-left quality and challenge ambiguous acceptance criteria before code is written. Furthermore, you will leverage large language models and AI tools to accelerate test authoring, perform failure clustering, and identify coverage gaps, while exercising critical judgment on where human oversight is essential. When issues reach production, you will close the loop using our observability stack, correlating test coverage with real-world customer impact to ensure testing efforts align with business priorities.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect a pragmatic test pyramid for React Native, defining the precise role of end-to-end tests versus faster layers like Jest and React Testing Library.
- Determine where automation provides the strongest return on investment and where human insight is indispensable, making deliberate trade-offs concerning coverage, reliability, and speed.
- Build and maintain robust end-to-end test suites using Maestro, managing the entire lifecycle including test data management, device configuration, and helper libraries.
- Establish clear quality gates that define when a build is ready to ship, ensuring every release aligns with our commitment to excellence and user protection.
- Integrate testing workflows with GitHub Actions to provide rapid and trustworthy feedback on every pull request and release candidate.
- Drive down flakiness in the test suite and reduce diagnosis time, treating flaky tests with the same severity as broken tests and conducting thorough root-cause analysis.
- Utilize AI for test authoring acceleration, automatic failure clustering, and identifying coverage gaps, while ensuring AI adoption maintains trust and reliability.
- Contribute to shaping mobile team AI workflows, including crafting effective prompts, establishing guardrails, and defining review patterns for AI-assisted testing.
- Practice shift-left quality by engaging with product and engineering teams during the specification phase to challenge ambiguous acceptance criteria and highlight potential risks.
- Close the loop on production issues using our observability stack, including Datadog, Sentry, and Grafana, to correlate test coverage with real-world impact.
- Run targeted exploratory testing on high-risk releases when that approach provides the best path to confidence in the product.
- Collaborate closely with software engineers, product managers, and designers to solve complex problems and build underlying test infrastructure.
- Develop helpers, debug layers, and runtime tooling to support the test suite and improve the development process for the entire team.
- Create an environment where quality is everyone's responsibility and automation acts as a true enabler of velocity.
- Ensure testing efforts are continuously aligned with the highest business priorities by correlating technical test data with customer behavior and outcomes.
Requirements
- Have a minimum of six years of experience in quality engineering, with a proven track record of maintaining stable, sustainable automated suites rather than allowing them to decay.
- Possess hands-on experience introducing AI-assisted testing practices, balancing innovation with the necessary controls for review and trust.
- Demonstrate a strong technical foundation, particularly in TypeScript and JavaScript, using these skills to write tests and build tooling and debugging capabilities for runtime issues.
- Be experienced in shaping CI/CD pipelines with a focus on reliability, flakiness reduction, and efficient execution, ideally within GitHub Actions.
- Show the ability to make deliberate, data-informed trade-offs concerning test coverage, execution reliability, and speed.
- Exhibit a strict stance on test reliability, understanding the importance of treating flaky tests with the same severity as broken tests.
- Display experience in defining quality gates and release readiness criteria that protect users and the brand.
- Demonstrate the capability to close the loop on production issues using observability tools like Datadog, Sentry, and Grafana to guide testing efforts.
