About the role

JetBrains seeks a Staff Software Developer to own the future of the IntelliJ Platform. In this capacity, you will define core APIs and quality standards for developer tools used globally. You will guide subsystem modernization and shape the team's definition of done. Your work will balance technical tradeoffs while advancing remote development and UI tooling capabilities.

What you will do

Define minimal plugin interfaces to expand remote workflows and internal tooling for the platform team. Architect settings portability so configurations move smoothly between machines and remote environments. Refactor legacy subsystems to satisfy modern demands while preserving backward stability. Orchestrate deprecation policies for the IntelliJ Platform API to guide external consumers safely. Define integration patterns that keep UI frameworks coherent across desktop and cloud experiences. Establish testing strategies that validate large scale changes before they reach production workflows. Create documentation standards that clarify boundaries for internal teams and external contributors. Guide monorefactoring efforts so critical paths remain reliable during extensive structural changes. Monitor ecosystem health to ensure new features unlock value for downstream plugin developers quickly. Champion quality gates that catch regressions early without slowing release cadence.

Requirements

You must possess extensive platform architecture experience shaping complex systems at scale. You must understand JVM concurrency deeply to avoid pitfalls in high parallel workloads. You must know Kotlin coroutines thoroughly to write correct asynchronous platform code. You must excel at technical writing, producing clear documentation for intricate design decisions. You must think critically, foreseeing architectural risks before they impact users. You must organize and perform large scale refactoring inside monorepos without disruption.

Nice to have

You have built developer tools that influenced real world workflows beyond internal use. You have worked with multiple UI frameworks and understand their rendering tradeoffs. You know database internals and how they interact with editor performance characteristics. You have experience with network applications and distributed system challenges.
