Job description
You will co-lead JetBrains' global export controls and sanctions program, shaping the compliance strategy that underpins our international revenue operations. The role requires you to drive rigorous compliance with EU and U.S. export controls while proactively managing risks associated with emerging AI-related regulations. You will enable the global sales organization to operate securely and confidently by safeguarding the company from regulatory and reputational risk. In this capacity, you will act as a critical strategic partner, embedding compliance directly into the business fabric to support growth without compromising regulatory integrity. Your work will directly protect the company and its 11 million users by ensuring all activities align with the strictest international requirements. You will own the design and execution of controls that govern the transfer of technology and data across borders. Ultimately, you will be responsible for maintaining a robust program that allows JetBrains to innovate and scale globally within a compliant framework.

Co-lead the group-wide export controls and sanctions program, establishing the foundational governance and oversight.
Monitor and interpret evolving EU export control regulations, U.S. export controls, sanctions regimes, and enforcement trends to ensure proactive adaptation.
Own the classification, licensing, and technology-transfer processes for software and AI-related products to ensure accurate regulatory handling.
Advise on higher-risk transactions, strategic deals, mergers and acquisitions, market entry strategies, and technology partner onboarding to mitigate compliance exposure.
Build and refine workflows, documentation standards, and automation tools to enhance the efficiency and reliability of trade compliance operations.
Act as the designated escalation point for transactions involving restricted countries, sanctioned entities, and other high-risk reviews requiring specialized oversight.
Collaborate closely with Legal, Sales, Product, Procurement, Finance, and Security teams to resolve cross-border compliance issues and align on risk management.
Assist and drive sanctions and export control-related investigations, concern reviews, and remediation activities to address potential violations.
Maintain current awareness of AI-related export control measures and assess their impact on product development and go-to-market strategies.
Champion a culture of compliance within the organization by providing training, guidance, and accessible resources to support global teams.
Evaluate and manage vendor and third-party risks related to export controls to ensure supply chain integrity.
Prepare and analyze compliance metrics and reporting to support executive decision-making and regulatory inquiries.
Contribute to the development and testing of internal policies and procedures to align with best practices in software export compliance.
Serve as the internal compliance expert point of contact for regional offices to ensure consistent application of standards worldwide.
8+ years of on-hands EU and U.S. trade compliance experience in a technology or global software environment, demonstrating a deep practical understanding of the field.
Strong command of EU export control regulations (EUDU), the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR), including de minimis rules, Foreign Direct Product Rule (FDPR), and AI-related controls, as well as applicable sanctions regimes.
Proven ability to interpret technical software features and AI functionalities for the purpose of export classification and regulatory assessment.
Pragmatic, business-oriented judgment that balances regulatory obligations with commercial objectives, enabling sensible decision-making.
Excellent communication skills, with fluency in English, to articulate complex regulatory concepts to diverse stakeholders effectively.
A demonstrated history of working with export management and compliance authorities, understanding their expectations and procedures.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to navigate ambiguous situations and derive clear compliance pathways.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive regulatory matters with the utmost discretion.
Experience in the software or technology industry, with a background in SaaS, cloud, or developer tools environments.
Familiarity with AI-specific export control frameworks and emerging regulatory guidance in this space.
Knowledge of internal compliance management systems or GRC platforms.
Experience managing compliance programs across multiple jurisdictions beyond the EU and U.S.
This is a hybrid role with flexibility for remote work, allowing up to 30 days per year working remotely from abroad.
