About the role
Hudson River Trading is seeking a Systems Engineer specializing in Windows to join our dynamic team. In this position, you will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing our Windows-based systems. You will collaborate with various teams to ensure optimal performance and reliability of our trading infrastructure. The Systems Engineer will own the stability and security of critical Windows servers that underpin high-frequency trading activities. You will serve as the primary technical contact for platform issues within your designated environment. This role requires a proactive approach to identifying potential system failures before they impact business operations. You will work closely with development and operations partners to implement robust and scalable solutions. Your contributions will directly influence the reliability and speed of our technological edge in global markets.

- Architect and maintain resilient Windows server infrastructures to support uninterrupted trading workflows.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of system performance metrics to identify and remediate bottlenecks proactively.
- Design and deploy automation scripts using PowerShell to streamline repetitive administrative tasks.
- Troubleshoot complex system-level failures in coordination with network and application engineering peers.
- Implement stringent security protocols and hardening standards across all Windows-based assets.
- Translate business requirements into technical specifications for new Windows services and applications.
- Coordinate with infrastructure vendors to resolve hardware and software compatibility issues efficiently.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive system documentation to ensure operational continuity and knowledge transfer.
- Monitor system health around the clock utilizing monitoring platforms to trigger rapid incident response.
- Optimize storage and compute resource allocation to align with the demands of intensive trading applications.
- Validate system backups and disaster recovery procedures to guarantee data integrity and availability.
- Participate in on-call rotation schedules to provide immediate support during critical production incidents.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and tools to enhance the efficiency and stability of the Windows ecosystem.
- Liaise with security teams to ensure all systems adhere to regulatory compliance and internal governance policies.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in systems engineering with a primary focus on Windows environments.
- Demonstrated proficiency in PowerShell scripting and the implementation of automation tools for system management.
- A solid and practical understanding of Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, and comprehensive Windows Server administration.
- Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware or Hyper-V in production-level deployments.
- A firm grasp of networking concepts, protocols, and troubleshooting methodologies as they apply to enterprise systems.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related technical field is required.
- Eligibility to obtain necessary security clearances or work authorization in the United States, United Kingdom, or other assignment locations.
- A proven track record of maintaining high availability and performance standards in fast-paced operational settings.
- Strong analytical skills to diagnose complex problems and implement effective technical solutions under pressure.
- Commitment to adhering to strict operational procedures and documentation standards.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
- Understanding of ticketing systems and the ability to utilize them for tracking and resolving technical issues.
- Willingness to participate in rotational on-call duties as required to support global business operations.

- Knowledge of Linux operating systems and their integration with Windows-based environments.
- Experience working in financial services or trading environments where uptime is critical.
- Familiarity with cloud technologies and services, including hybrid cloud management tools.
- Understanding of network security appliances and firewall configurations relevant to trading systems.
- Experience with scripting languages beyond PowerShell, such as Python or Bash, for infrastructure tasks.
- Familiarity with load balancing and high availability clustering for Windows servers.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as MiFID or SEC regulations related to technology in finance.
- Experience with version control systems for infrastructure as code practices.
- Background in quantitative finance or exposure to trading systems and data structures.
- Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical best practices within the team.
