Process Engineer (Tempo)
Job description
About the role
This role ensures site readiness and process maturity for the Tempo brand across fulfillment centers. It standardizes operations, partners cross functionally, and drives packaging and automation improvements. The position serves as the key liaison for packaging enhancements and operational excellence.
Software engineers turn product ideas into working code. Engineers work in small teams, review each other's work, and ship in small batches. Most teams follow agile practices such as sprints and daily standups. Engineers also write tests, fix bugs, and improve performance. The field values clear communication as much as technical skill. Engineers spend part of every week on planning, code review, and debugging, not just writing new code. The ability to explain a technical decision in plain words separates strong engineers from the rest.
Key facts
What you'll do
Site openings and RTH expansions are scoped with plant and corporate teams to define goals and ensure readiness. New initiative roadmaps for RTH are created and maintained for rollout to the site from corporate partners.
Machine Operator training and preventive maintenance plans are created, launched, and standardized with plant teams. Machine performance is tracked, analyzed, and reported to guide operational improvements. Automation opportunities within the RTH process are identified, proposed, and implemented to increase capabilities.
Requirements
The posting states a bachelor's degree requirement. A four-year degree in a related STEM field such as Industrial Engineering is required, with 1-2 years of operations experience strongly preferred. Food manufacturing experience is preferred, and supply chain or operations excellence backgrounds are especially suitable. Communication skills are required to drive alignment and manage conflict across cross functional teams and external stakeholders.
Project management ability is necessary to oversee multiple workstreams and facilitate problem solving among diverse stakeholders. Willingness and ability to accommodate up to 50% travel to fulfillment centers is mandatory. Analytical skills are required, including experience using Excel to model data and present findings. High energy, strong people skills, influential partnership history, and flexibility to handle projects of any size are essential. A strategic mindset that balances big picture thinking with detailed analysis is expected.
Practical notes
This position requires up to 50% travel and involves significant cross functional collaboration within a diverse and inclusive team. Typical interview steps
Hiring for engineering roles usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two technical rounds. Candidates often solve a coding problem, discuss past projects, and answer system design questions. Some loops include a take-home task. Final rounds typically cover team fit and give candidates a chance to ask questions. Interviewers look for how you break down an unfamiliar problem, not just whether you reach the answer. Practicing a few problems aloud and reviewing your own past projects are the best preparation.
Good to know
Tempo offers rotating ready-to-heat meals designed for convenience and nutrition. The role relies on performance metrics, standard operating procedures, and cross functional collaboration to drive improvements. Analytical tools such as Excel are used to model data and communicate insights. Continuous improvement methods and machine process understanding are central to success in this position.
Career growth
Engineering careers usually progress from individual contributor to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some engineers move into management and lead teams of five to twenty people. Others stay on the technical track. Growth follows demonstrated impact, not tenure alone. A typical engineering ladder has clear levels with defined expectations for scope, quality, and mentorship. Moving up usually requires owning outcomes end to end rather than completing assigned tickets.
