Developer Experience Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will architect and deliver the developer experience infrastructure that turns fragmented engineering workflows into a cohesive, AI-ready system. This role owns the end-to-end journey of the engineer, from onboarding their first service to deploying complex multi-service systems with confidence. You will act as the internal advocate for tooling, measuring and reducing cognitive load across the entire engineering organization. You will design and implement the golden paths that allow teams to move fast without sacrificing reliability or consistency. This position requires a builder who is comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and iterating quickly based on real feedback. You will define what great development looks like at Hiive and enable every engineer to live that standard.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design and build internal developer tools, templates, scripts, and workflows that streamline local development, testing, CI/CD, deployment, observability, and code review for the entire engineering organization.
Lead practical AI adoption across Engineering by evaluating emerging tools, designing secure usage patterns, creating reference implementations, and helping teams integrate AI safely into their day-to-day delivery processes.
Partner directly with product engineers to uncover bottlenecks in their workflows, prioritize the highest-impact improvements, and quantify the effects of tooling changes on speed, quality, and satisfaction.
Create and maintain golden paths for common engineering workflows, including new service scaffolding, environment setup, recurring development tasks, and release management processes.
Improve documentation, onboarding experiences, and self-service support so engineers can resolve common workflow issues independently, without relying on specialized experts.
Design and implement automation that eliminates repetitive manual work, reduces handoffs between teams, and makes operational systems easier to understand and maintain.
Write production-quality code while collaborating closely with platform, product engineering, security, and data teams to ensure solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with organizational standards.
Establish metrics and feedback loops to continuously assess the health of the developer experience, identifying friction points and validating the impact of each initiative.
Champion experimentation by turning ambiguous developer pain points into clearly defined problems, lightweight prototypes, and shipped tooling improvements that scale.
Own the roadmap for the developer experience function, balancing quick wins with strategic investments that enable long-term engineering efficiency.
Ensure all tools and workflows adhere to security, compliance, and operational best practices required for a regulated, high-growth fintech environment.
Act as a subject matter expert and thought partner for teams exploring new technologies, frameworks, or architectural patterns that affect the broader platform.
Contribute to open source adjacent internal libraries and patterns that make it easier for engineers to build and ship reliable, well-observability services.
Foster a culture of shared ownership by enabling other engineers to contribute back to the tooling and documentation they depend on.
Requirements
You have built or significantly maintained internal developer tools, platform tooling, or engineering productivity systems in a professional setting.
You possess strong software engineering ability in at least one modern programming language and can comfortably extend your skills to scripts, services, APIs, and developer-facing integrations.
You have hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools, coding agents, workflow automation, or applying artificial intelligence to software delivery in a production context.
You can translate ambiguous developer pain points into clearly defined problems, run lightweight experiments, and deliver measurable tooling improvements.
You are experienced with modern development workflows including Git, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and production operations.
You communicate clearly and concisely in writing, with a focus on creating helpful documentation and guidance for internal technical audiences.
You are comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment where priorities can shift quickly and ownership is expected at all levels.
You understand the importance of security, compliance, and operational reliability when building tools that impact the entire engineering organization.
Nice to have
You have experience with developer portals, service templates, internal platforms, Backstage, or similar self-service tooling that enables developer independence.
You have worked in a high-growth fintech, marketplace, or regulated technology environment where tooling decisions directly affect compliance and risk.
You have practical experience with infrastructure as code, containers, cloud platforms, or deployment automation that can be codified into golden paths.
You have designed or delivered internal enablement programs, engineering playbooks, or AI adoption guidelines that change how teams work.
