Payment Intelligence Engineer
GoCardless is a global bank payment company. Over 100,000 businesses, from start-ups to household names, use GoCardless to collect, manage and send bank payments through Direct Debit, real-time payments and open banking. With US$130bn+ processed annually across 30+ countries, we handle recurring and one-off payments without the chasing, stress, or expensive fees. Our end-to-end payment platform also features AI-powered solutions to improve payment success and reduce fraud, alongside connections to over 350 platforms businesses use everyday. The Payment Intelligence team exists to augment our bank payments product with intelligent data products that differentiate our offering and increase our win rates. Our focus centers on our existing products, Success+ and Protect+. This means creating market-leading payment recovery rates and fraud prevention products. Projects in the pipeline that align to these focus areas include improving payment recovery rates for failed Account to Account payments, improving fraud detection rates of our ML models and rules based systems, and improving the consumer authentication flow experiences for high risk payments. As an engineer, you will actively work on projects that help grow the adoption of these products while improving the experience of using them, supported by a team of talented engineers. This is a high-profile opportunity to contribute to one of GoCardless's major revenue streams in the coming years.

Base salary range is 2,933-4,400 EUR gross. Base salary ranges are determined by role, job level, location, and market data. While we offer competitive compensation, our approach is to pay between the minimum and the mid-point of the range until performance is assessed in role. Offers consider experience level, interview assessment, budgets, and parity with colleagues in similar roles.

The role
You own the design and delivery of data products that lift payment recovery and fraud prevention. You write code with Ruby and Python inside a cross functional squad. Your work moves from prototype to production while improving win rates for GoCardless.

Your responsibilities
- Design payment recovery features that raise failed transaction success using AI and rules.
- Craft fraud detection logic that strengthens model performance and cuts abuse risk.
- Redesign consumer authentication steps to improve high risk payment clarity and speed.
- Build experiments that test new product ideas and validate outcomes with real user data.
- Partner with product managers to define feature specs and align roadmap priorities.
- Champion observability so teams can trace issues and iterate on live payment flows.
- Refine APIs so banking partners integrate smoothly with Direct Debit and open banking.
- Lead knowledge sharing so engineers across teams understand payment intelligence solutions.
Requirements
- You must have programming experience with Ruby and or Python.
- You need 3-5 years in software engineering roles building production services.
- You must adapt quickly to new technologies and process changes at pace.
- You need experience working with cross functional teams and business stakeholders.

- You enjoy experimenting, prototyping, and applying an iterative approach.
