About the role
The Statistician role at General Matter centers on strengthening the Nuclear Material Control and Accountability program that underpins our uranium enrichment operations. You will own basic statistical calculations that directly support inventory accuracy and material balance integrity for nuclear materials. This position demands a detail-oriented thinker who applies algebra, probability, and descriptive statistics to real-world measurement challenges. You will verify and track weights, volumes, and assay results to ensure data reliability for regulatory compliance. The role involves designing and checking forms, spreadsheets, and databases used in MC&A reporting and supporting periodic physical inventories. You will work closely with engineers to reconcile records with actual counts and prepare compliance reports for internal audits. In this capacity, you will learn applied MC&A concepts alongside safeguards staff and help maintain transparent, accurate documentation. This is a mission-driven role that supports making clean nuclear energy the most affordable and reliable baseload power source.

What you'll do
Perform basic statistical calculations to support inventory checks and material balances for nuclear material tracking.
Track and verify measurement data, including weights, volumes, and assay results, to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Calculate averages, error margins, and simple uncertainty estimates for measurements used in safeguards and compliance.
Design, check, and maintain forms, spreadsheets, and databases that feed into MC&A reporting and regulatory documentation.
Support periodic physical inventories by coordinating counts, reconciling records with actual results, and investigating discrepancies.
Assist in preparing compliance reports, internal audits, and documentation aligned with NRC regulations and safeguards requirements.
Work with engineers and safeguards staff to learn applied MC&A concepts and integrate them into routine measurement tasks.
Ensure documentation reflects exact measurements, calculations, and assumptions to satisfy audit trails and regulatory review.
Use Excel and other tools to organize data, automate calculations, and visualize measurement trends for decision support.
Contribute to continuous improvement in material control processes by identifying data anomalies and proposing procedural refinements.
Maintain strict attention to detail to prevent data entry errors, calculation mistakes, or reporting inconsistencies in nuclear material records.
Support ad hoc analytical tasks that arise during inspections, audits, or operational reviews requiring rapid statistical support.
Communicate quantitative findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders during briefings and reviews.
Help implement standardized methods for tracking nuclear material flows across measurement, storage, and processing stages.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Math, Statistics, Physics, or a related field.
Proficiency in advanced math fundamentals, including algebra, probability, and descriptive statistics such as means, variance, standard deviation, and error propagation.
Proficiency in Excel for data organization, calculation, and reporting.
Excellent attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities to handle complex measurement and compliance scenarios.
Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to meet operational and regulatory deadlines.
Willingness to learn and apply Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements and safeguards regulations accurately.
Ability to work effectively in a mission-driven, fast-paced engineering environment with a focus on safety and compliance.
Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain mathematical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment with engineers, safeguards staff, and operations personnel.
Interest in learning about nuclear safeguards, regulatory compliance, and measurement control processes.
Capacity to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work in an environment requiring resourcefulness and an entrepreneurial approach.
Familiarity with basic physics or chemistry concepts related to nuclear materials is beneficial.
Evidence of exceptional ability through prior projects, portfolio of work, or completed products that demonstrate analytical rigor.

This is a full-time position based in Los Angeles, California.
The role may require extended hours and weekend work as needed to meet project and regulatory deadlines.

The compensation band is $75,000-$120,000 annually, with potential for adjustments based on market conditions, business needs, and individual qualifications.
