CNC Machinist (Mill & Lathe)
Job description
About the role
General Matter enriches uranium by designing, building, and operating the world's lowest-cost enrichment services here in the US. This role owns the hands-on execution of CNC machining for critical nuclear fuel components, directly supporting the restoration of American fuel production capacity. You will partner with engineering to optimize processes, improve throughput, and enable scalable manufacturing in a mission-driven, urgency-focused environment. The ideal hire values craftsmanship, understands fundamentals, and can think strategically while troubleshooting complex multi-axis machining issues. You will run live tooling and multi-axis CNC operations, develop programs, and lead cycle-time reduction initiatives. Success in this role means contributing to a post-scarcity society where abundant, affordable nuclear energy becomes the cleanest and safest baselock power. You will be embedded in a lean, world-class team applying first-principles thinking within a culture of accountability and transparency.
Key facts
What you'll do
Program, set up, and operate CNC Mills and CNC Lathes, including live tooling and multi-axis operations to produce precision components.
Develop and optimize CNC programs using G-code and CAM-generated toolpaths for complex geometries and tight tolerances in a nuclear manufacturing context.
Execute first-article builds, prove-outs, and low-volume production runs in an R&D environment to validate processes before scaling.
Troubleshoot machining issues related to tooling, fixturing, materials, and machine dynamics to eliminate defects and improve yield.
Design, fabricate, and iterate custom fixtures and workholding solutions that enhance part stability, repeatability, and setup efficiency.
Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to improve part stability, repeatability, and setup efficiency across production batches.
Lead or support cycle-time reduction initiatives through toolpath optimization, tooling selection, and process redesign for higher throughput.
Identify opportunities to reduce setup time, scrap, and rework while contributing to standard work, setup documentation, and machining best practices.
Support the transition of R&D processes into stable, repeatable production workflows that can be reliably scaled to meet demand.
Work closely with design and manufacturing engineers during early-stage development to provide manufacturability feedback on part designs (DFM).
Support rapid prototyping, design changes, and engineering experiments with short turnaround times to accelerate technology development.
Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop floor that complies with quality, safety, and regulatory standards for nuclear work.
