This role involves defining and enforcing engineering standards for quality, scalability, and maintainability across the infrastructure team. You will lead foundational upgrades and technical initiatives that remove friction for product teams and enable them to move quickly without compromising platform stability. You will take responsibility for long-term health of the codebase, making thoughtful technical decisions that support Fullscript's mission and growth trajectory. You will mentor and influence best practices, improving the systems that developers work in every day. What you'll do
Architect and maintain scalable backend services that form the foundation of Fullscript's health technology platform, ensuring they meet the needs of 125,000 practitioners and 10 million patients.
Define and uphold rigorous engineering standards for quality, scalability, and maintainability, creating guardrails that allow product teams to deliver features safely and quickly.
Lead foundational upgrades and infrastructure projects that modernize our stack and reduce long-term technical debt across the core application.
Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to translate clinical and business requirements into reliable technical solutions that keep practitioner workflows seamless and secure.
Improve the developer experience by building and maintaining tools that reduce friction, automate repetitive tasks, and simplify decision-making for internal teams.
Monitor and enhance system performance, reliability, and observability to support stable, always-available access to patient care plans and supplement data.
Collaborate with data and product teams to design analytics and insights tools that help practitioners interpret lab results and track patient progress effectively.
Champion security and compliance practices in backend services, ensuring sensitive health information is handled with the utmost care and in accordance with regulations.
Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of craftsmanship, thoughtful technical decisions, and continuous improvement within the infrastructure team.
Explore and evaluate new technologies, proposing modern stack improvements that align with Fullscript's long-term vision and growth objectives.
Drive initiatives to simplify and standardize APIs and integrations, enabling faster product development and more consistent experiences for practitioners and patients.
Support incident response and operational readiness, helping to resolve critical issues and implementing preventative measures to avoid future disruptions.
Contribute to the long-term health of the codebase by refactoring legacy components, improving test coverage, and ensuring sustainable development practices.
Engage with the broader Fullscript community by sharing knowledge, documenting systems, and promoting best practices across the organization.
Evaluate and implement tools for observability, monitoring, and debugging to ensure backend services are performant and reliable under production loads.
Requirements
You have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
You possess 8+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong track record of delivering complex backend systems.
You are proficient in modern backend programming languages such as Java, Python, or similar, with deep experience in at least one language commonly used in production-grade services.
You have hands-on experience with relational databases and SQL, along with a solid understanding of database design, indexing, and query optimization.
You understand distributed systems principles, including scalability, fault tolerance, and consistency, and have implemented solutions in real-world environments.
You have experience building and consuming RESTful APIs, with a strong grasp of HTTP protocols, request/response patterns, and integration best practices.
You are comfortable working in cloud environments and using infrastructure as code, with familiarity with deployment pipelines and containerization technologies.
You demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, debugging abilities, and the capacity to diagnose issues in complex, production-grade systems.
Nice to have
Experience with Fullscript's tech stack or similar health technology platforms is a plus, as is familiarity with clinical data standards and workflows.
Background in healthcare, supplements, or practitioner-focused applications is preferred, along with any knowledge of regulatory considerations around health information.
Experience contributing to open source or building internal developer tools is valued, as is a history of mentoring engineers or leading technical initiatives.

This is a full-time position based in Ottawa, ON.
