Senior Design Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the connective tissue between Design and Engineering at Front, translating high fidelity design intent into production quality UI systems that scale. You will act as the living bridge between Figma and code, ensuring that design systems remain accurate, maintainable, and actionable for every product team. This role requires deep frontend craft combined with design systems thinking to evolve our component library and tooling in a fast moving B2B environment. You will partner closely with designers and engineers to define standards, patterns, and guardrails that make building complex customer operations workflows intuitive and consistent. You will leverage AI tools judiciously to speed iteration while maintaining rigorous quality and accessibility standards. Ultimately, you will be responsible for turning static design documentation into living, production grade systems that help teams move faster without losing coherence.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own and evolve Front's design system across Figma, Storybook, and production code, helping create a clearer source of truth between design and engineering.
- Build, refactor, and maintain reusable, accessible, well-documented UI components that product teams can confidently use across Front's core surfaces.
- Identify and reduce design/code drift across our existing component libraries, legacy UI patterns, and evolving Figma system.
- Establish patterns, conventions, and guardrails that improve consistency, accessibility, maintainability, and developer experience.
- Prototype new interaction patterns and reference implementations in code to help teams align quickly and de-risk complex product decisions.
- Partner closely with Product Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers to define what "great" looks like for complex workflows, edge cases, and enterprise-grade product experiences.
- Use AI tools thoughtfully to accelerate prototyping, iteration, production changes, and system maintenance while applying strong judgment to the output.
- Advocate for and contribute to best practices in accessibility, semantic HTML, keyboard interaction, focus management, and inclusive component states.
- Measure and communicate the impact of design system improvements on product velocity, quality, and consistency across customer operations workflows.
- Drive adoption of design system components through documentation, demos, and hands on support for internal product teams.
- Implement visual regression testing, linting, and CI workflows that keep the design system reliable and easy to maintain at scale.
- Explore and prototype emerging patterns such as AI assisted workflows, real time collaboration surfaces, and complex data grids within the Front design system.
- Work across the entire product lifecycle from discovery and prototyping through launch and post launch iteration with customer operations teams.
- Ensure components are performant, scalable, and suited for enterprise customers with complex workflows and high expectations.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience designing and building production frontend experiences, ideally in complex B2B SaaS, enterprise software, developer tools, or similarly deep product domains.
- Strong frontend engineering skills with modern web technologies and component based architecture. You do not need to have used Front's exact stack, but you should be able to ramp quickly in a large, mature codebase.
- High UI/UX craft and strong product taste. You can evaluate whether an interface is not only visually polished, but also usable, accessible, flexible, and maintainable.
- Experience building or maintaining component libraries, Storybook documentation, visual regression workflows, design token pipelines, Figma workflows/plugins, or similar design engineering infrastructure.
- Strong accessibility fundamentals, including semantic HTML, ARIA patterns, keyboard interaction models, focus management, and inclusive component states.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence cross functional teams without direct authority.
- Comfort working in a fast paced, ambiguous environment where requirements evolve quickly in customer operations contexts.
- Willingness to work closely with designers and engineers to iterate on requirements and deliver high quality, production ready UI solutions.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI assisted development tools and prompt engineering for UI development and design system maintenance.
- Background working with design tokens, theming systems, and token to code workflows.
- Familiarity with customer operations, support, or workflow automation domains.
- Contributions to open source design systems or complex frontend platforms.
