Senior Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
This position centers on designing and delivering high-performance mobile features for a global audience. As a Senior Android Engineer at Freshworks, you will own the architecture of our flagship Android applications. The role requires close collaboration with product, design, and engineering teams to define, build, and release features that serve millions of users. You will mentor junior developers, enforce code quality standards, and champion best practices in testing and mobile platform evolution.
Your daily work will involve full ownership of the feature lifecycle. This includes translating design concepts into robust Android experiences, implementing performance optimizations, and ensuring stability across diverse device ecosystems. You will be responsible for defining technical direction using established architectural principles and modern Android tooling.
Core Responsibilities
Design and implement features using native Android (Kotlin/Java), Flutter, or React Native.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Android frameworks including Jetpack, Compose, Coroutines, Flow, Room, WorkManager, and Architecture Components.
Work alongside UX/UI designers to convert prototypes into production-level code.
Develop comprehensive test suites, including unit, integration, and UI tests, to guarantee reliability.
Analyze runtime metrics to optimize memory usage, network calls, startup time, rendering, and battery efficiency.
Create efficient data loading, caching, prefetching, and background processing mechanisms.
Apply design patterns such as MVVM, Clean Architecture, Repository, and Dependency Injection.
Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines using Gradle, GitHub Actions, Fastlane, and deployment platforms.
Collaborate with backend engineers on RESTful and GraphQL API integration, focusing on error handling and offline capabilities.
Partner with QA teams to resolve issues across various Android devices, screen sizes, OS versions, and OEM configurations.
Take end-to-end responsibility for features from initial requirements to post-release monitoring.
Define and track key performance indicators such as crash rates, engagement, and ANR occurrences.
Ensure team adherence to compliance and information security standards.
Professional Requirements
You must possess a minimum of 3 to 5 years of Android development experience.
You demonstrate expert-level proficiency in Kotlin and a solid grasp of Java interoperability.
You have expert mastery of the Android SDK, Android Studio, Gradle, and performance profiling tools.
You have hands-on experience with Jetpack libraries including ViewModel, LiveData/Flow, Room, Navigation, WorkManager, and DataStore.
You are experienced in building UIs with Jetpack Compose and/or traditional XML layouts.
You understand object-oriented principles, design patterns, and clean architecture fundamentals.
You have experience with data persistence technologies like Room, SQLite, and caching strategies.
You are skilled in networking libraries such as Retrofit, OkHttp, and GraphQL clients.
You have strong skills in memory management, multithreading, concurrency, Coroutines, and asynchronous programming.
You can build scalable, maintainable, and high-performance mobile applications.
You approach problem-solving with a data-driven mindset.
You have extensive experience with Agile methodologies.
You understand the Software Development Lifecycle and data structures, along with algorithm complexity.
You are adaptable and thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
Preferred Skills
Familiarity with Flutter, Jetpack Compose, and modern mobile UI practices.
Experience with feature flagging, A/B testing, and remote configuration tools like Firebase Remote Config.
Knowledge of GraphQL integration on mobile platforms.
Background in mobile-specific CI/CD tooling.
Understanding of mobile security practices, including encryption, certificate pinning, and secure API communication.
Experience with crash reporting and monitoring tools such as Firebase Crashlytics, Sentry, or Datadog.
Experience in modular Android architecture and managing large-scale codebases.
Exposure to Play Store processes, including signing, build variants, and release management.
Participation in open-source projects or Android developer communities.
