Key facts
What you'll do
Architect and maintain the core infrastructure that powers the Financial Times newsroom and public facing products.
Define and enforce technical standards that support editorial workflows, content management, and data integrity across all platforms.
Collaborate with journalists, editors, and product teams to identify opportunities for technology to enhance reporting and audience engagement.
Lead the design and implementation of scalable systems that support real time data processing and content delivery.
Evaluate emerging technologies and tools, translating complex technical concepts into clear recommendations for editorial and business stakeholders.
Partner with data specialists to build pipelines that enable analytics, audience insights, and data driven decision making.
Champion security and compliance practices to protect sources, editorial drafts, and sensitive audience information.
Mentor and guide engineers across the organization, sharing expertise and elevating the overall quality of code and design.
Drive automation of operational tasks to reduce manual effort and increase reliability of critical publishing systems.
Contribute to the long term strategic roadmap, balancing immediate editorial needs with sustainable technical foundations.
Work with open source communities and internal guilds to promote knowledge sharing and best practices across engineering disciplines.
Act as a bridge between technical teams and editorial leadership, ensuring that technical decisions remain aligned with journalistic values.
Requirements
You must have a strong background in software engineering or a related technical field with demonstrable experience in building and maintaining complex systems.
You must be proficient in modern programming languages and frameworks relevant to large scale web applications and services.
You must have a proven track record of designing and operating systems that are scalable, performant, and highly available.
You must understand data modeling, database technologies, and query optimization to ensure efficient and reliable information management.
You must have experience working with APIs, both consuming and designing them for interoperability between services and applications.
You must be comfortable working in fast paced, ambiguous environments where requirements evolve based on editorial and business needs.
You must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with both technical and non technical colleagues.
You must have a deep commitment to ethical technology practices, particularly in areas related to privacy, security, and responsible data use.
Nice to have
Experience working in media, news, or publishing environments where editorial deadlines and accuracy are critical.
Familiarity with content management systems and publishing workflows used by professional journalism organizations.
Knowledge of data visualization tools and techniques to help editorial teams present complex information clearly.
Experience contributing to or maintaining open source projects relevant to web infrastructure or data processing.
Understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles as they apply to digital news products.
