Software Engineer, Privacy & Data Governance

About the role

Figure is at the forefront of developing versatile humanoid robots, including the Figure 02 model, designed for both commercial applications and home use. We are looking for a skilled software engineer to join our Security & Privacy team. In this role, you will be responsible for embedding privacy controls into our robotic systems and backend infrastructure. Your primary focus will be on constructing architectures that prioritize privacy by design and ensuring compliance with stringent data protection regulations.

What you'll do

• Design and implement technical features that emphasize data minimization and privacy controls within our product's architecture.
• Develop and oversee privacy services that focus on critical aspects such as data deletion, retention policies, anonymization methods, and user control systems.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, artificial intelligence, and security teams to establish and uphold data governance standards across the organization.
• Create custom APIs, libraries, and scripts aimed at automating privacy enforcement and ensuring compliance throughout our technology stack.
• Interpret privacy regulations and translate them into technical specifications that can be implemented in scalable software solutions.
• Promote security and privacy best practices throughout the entire software development lifecycle, ensuring that these principles are integrated from the ground up.
• Conduct thorough testing and validation of privacy features to ensure they meet regulatory and organizational standards.
• Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the team.
• Stay updated on the latest trends and developments in privacy engineering and data governance to inform your work and contribute to innovative solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on privacy-related challenges and best practices.
• Engage with external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, to ensure our practices align with industry standards and expectations.

Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in privacy engineering, security, or software engineering is required.
• Strong programming skills in languages such as C, C++, Rust, Golang, or Python are essential for this role.
• Experience in developing microservices or APIs that focus on data governance or privacy management is highly desirable.
• In-depth knowledge of various privacy domains, including de-identification, data lineage, privacy-preserving techniques, and fundamental data protection principles.
• A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Proven ability to manage tasks autonomously while effectively collaborating with diverse stakeholders across the organization.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills are crucial for articulating complex privacy concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with cloud platforms and services, particularly those that support privacy and data governance initiatives.
• Experience with data protection impact assessments (DPIAs) and risk assessments related to privacy.
• Knowledge of international privacy regulations, such as GDPR, CCPA, or HIPAA, and their implications for technology development.
• Understanding of machine learning and AI principles as they pertain to privacy and data protection.
• Previous experience in a startup environment or fast-paced tech company is a plus.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in software development methodologies and best practices, including Agile and DevOps.
• Familiarity with tools and frameworks that support privacy engineering and data governance, such as data mapping tools and compliance management software.
• Strong analytical skills to assess and mitigate privacy risks effectively.
• Ability to version control systems, such as Git, for collaborative software development.

Practical notes

• The annual base salary for this position ranges from $150,000 to $350,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
