Senior Software Engineer, Android
Job description
About the role
You will define and execute the technical strategy for Android-based edge computing solutions that bring Ditto synchronization directly into defense and mission-critical workflows. You will architect and deliver performant Android services that operate reliably in disconnected, intermittent, and low-bandwidth environments on behalf of warfighters and first responders. This role requires you to own complex integrations end to end, from on-device behavior through cloud and gateway interoperability within the broader TAK ecosystem. You will serve as the senior technical authority for Android, setting standards, elevating code quality, and driving consistency across the mobile portfolio. In addition, you will mentor engineers at every level, providing hands-on guidance in architecture, debugging, and best practices for resilient edge software. You will act as a critical bridge between field operations and product engineering, translating real-world constraints and feedback into durable technical solutions. This position is ideal for a highly adaptable leader who thrives in ambiguous, high-stakes environments and balances urgent operational needs with long-term platform integrity.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and deliver Android-native applications and services that integrate Ditto synchronization into tactical and operational workflows, ensuring robust performance under real-world constraints.
Architect and implement reliable integration patterns between Ditto's synchronization engine and the TAK ecosystem, establishing data contracts and API boundaries that enable seamless interoperability.
Own the full lifecycle of edge software, from initial architecture and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement in live operational environments.
Design and enforce reliability, performance, and security standards for Android applications running on diverse mobile hardware in disconnected or low-bandwidth conditions.
Lead technical discovery and problem solving for complex integration and data-flow issues, creating tooling and practices that allow the broader team to independently resolve similar challenges.
Mentor engineers across Android, integration architecture, and TAK/ATAK workflows, elevating code quality, design rigor, and operational excellence through direct guidance and code review.
Collaborate closely with product and engineering leadership to shape the edge integration roadmap, prioritizing initiatives based on field feedback, operational realities, and technical trade-offs.
Evaluate emerging patterns and technologies in mobile and edge computing, translating lessons from production usage into clear architectural recommendations and product requirements.
Drive end-to-end delivery of integrations that span on-device services, synchronization logic, and backend systems, ensuring consistent behavior across networks and environments.
Act as a senior technical escalation resource, diagnosing and resolving critical issues in deployed systems and guiding less experienced engineers through similar problem-solving processes.
Contribute to the broader engineering culture by establishing best practices, documentation, and standards that make integration work reusable, observable, and maintainable.
Represent Ditto in cross-functional discussions, articulating the implications of field constraints and operational needs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Balance short-term operational fixes with long-term platform investments, ensuring that solutions remain scalable, testable, and sustainable in demanding environments.
Communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly and frequently, aligning technical decisions with mission-critical timelines and stakeholder expectations.
Requirements
8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong track record of building, shipping, and maintaining production applications at scale across the full stack.
4+ years of deep mobile application development experience, including extensive work with the Android SDK, Kotlin and/or Java, and proven experience overcoming the challenges of diverse mobile hardware and variable network conditions.
Demonstrated strength in integration design, including the ability to define clean API contracts, design resilient data synchronization patterns, and architect loosely coupled systems that interoperate reliably across organizational and technical boundaries.
Documented technical leadership, evidenced by making architectural decisions, setting technical direction for teams or projects, weighing trade-offs, and clearly communicating rationale to both engineers and stakeholders.
A history of mentoring engineers through code review, design guidance, and direct coaching, with examples of elevating team capability and ownership.
A highly adaptable, problem-solving mindset, comfortable navigating ambiguity, rapidly iterating on solutions, and balancing immediate operational needs with long-term technical fidelity.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical realities, edge cases, and user workflows into clear, actionable narratives for technical and non-technical audiences.
Proven experience working in or alongside defense, intelligence, or mission-critical environments, with an understanding of the constraints and operational realities that shape edge computing in these contexts.
Nice to have
Prior experience with TAK or related military data-link standards and Android-based tactical devices.
Deep knowledge of peer-to-peer synchronization, conflict resolution, and offline-first data architectures.
Background building or integrating with open standards or frameworks commonly used in defense and emergency response workflows.
Experience contributing to or maintaining large-scale, long-lived codebases where stability, testability, and maintainability are paramount.
Familiarity with secure software development practices and compliance considerations relevant to government and defense workloads.
