What you'll do

• Conduct precise utility locating using advanced detection equipment to identify underground utilities, including water, gas, electric, and telecommunications lines.
• Operate vacuum excavation equipment to safely expose utilities without damaging surrounding infrastructure.
• Collaborate with project managers and field crews to ensure that excavation plans align with utility locations and project timelines.
• Maintain accurate records of utility locations and excavation activities, documenting any discrepancies or issues encountered during the process.
• Adhere to all safety regulations and best practices while performing utility locating and excavation tasks.
• Participate in pre-excavation meetings to discuss project specifics, safety protocols, and utility location findings.
• Provide on-site support and guidance to other team members regarding utility locating and excavation techniques.
• Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to utility locating equipment and vacuum excavation tools to ensure optimal performance.
• Engage in continuous training and development to stay updated on the latest technologies and methods in utility locating and excavation.
• Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and team members to ensure clear understanding of project requirements and expectations.
• Assist in the maintenance and care of equipment, ensuring that all tools are in good working condition and ready for use.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training in utility locating or excavation preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in utility locating, vacuum excavation, or a related field.
• Familiarity with utility mapping and the ability to interpret utility plans and blueprints.
• Strong understanding of safety regulations and best practices related to excavation and utility work.
• Proficient in operating vacuum excavation equipment and utility locating tools.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with clients and team members.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to operate company vehicles as needed.
• Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.

Nice to have

• Certification in utility locating or vacuum excavation from a recognized organization.
• Experience with GIS mapping software or other utility management systems.
• Knowledge of local utility regulations and standards in Arizona.
• Previous experience in a construction or civil engineering environment.
• Familiarity with environmental regulations related to excavation and utility work.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in the use of utility locating equipment such as electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar (GPR).
• Skilled in operating vacuum excavation machinery and understanding its maintenance requirements.
• Competence in using digital tools for documentation and reporting, including mobile applications and software.
• Strong analytical skills to assess utility locations and make informed decisions on excavation methods.
