About the Role
The Elastic Cloud Platform is the foundation that powers Elastic's products in the cloud. It is the responsibility of this team to absorb the undifferentiated heavy lifting, constructing and operating the services that empower engineers everywhere to develop, ship, and run software at scale. This role represents a critical contribution to that mission.
You are a Software Engineer II who will design and build the cloud services that our engineering teams rely on daily. Under the guidance of senior staff, you will take end-to-end ownership of your work, shaping solutions and moving code confidently into production. Your contributions will directly impact the reliability and performance of distributed systems used by many users across regions. The position is fully distributed, with collaboration occurring daily via GitHub, Slack, and Zoom.
What You Will Be Doing
You will be responsible for designing, building, and operating software components that form the backbone of Elastic's search and security products. You will own well-scoped pieces of larger projects, guiding them from initial requirements gathering through to stable operation in production environments.
Your daily work will involve architecting technical solutions and translating them into clean, testable, and efficient code. You will partner with seasoned engineers to untangle complex problems, asking clarifying questions early to ensure alignment. You will actively participate in code reviews and design discussions, contributing to the collective quality of the codebase.
Once services are live, you will oversee their operation and participate in the on-call rotation. You will investigate complex outages that go beyond standard runbooks, leaving improvements for the next person. To keep the system healthy, you will automate repetitive tasks using code and communicate status and blockers early and often through written channels.
What You Will Bring Along
The ideal candidate possesses hands-on experience writing services in the Go programming language. If you are proficient in another systems language, a strong willingness to rapidly ramp up on Go is essential. You must have a working understanding of Kubernetes fundamentals, including Pods, Deployments, and Services.
You should be familiar with at least one major cloud provider, such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, in a practical setting. A deep curiosity about how distributed services interact and handle real-world load at scale is required. You must be comfortable working through ambiguity with the support of more experienced teammates.
Clear written and verbal communication is critical in this async-first, globally distributed environment. You should care deeply about the quality of the work you ship, with a focus on testing, observability, and operability.
Bonus Points
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Crossplane or Kubernetes operators is highly valued. Proven ability to seamlessly transition between different projects, codebases, or scrum teams based on dynamic business priorities is a significant asset.
You work autonomously and can drive decisions and results in a distributed team by leveraging direct, transparent, and asynchronous communication. Demonstrated experience using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate feature development, debug complex systems, and optimize existing codebases is considered a plus.
A background working in a cloud-based SaaS environment or on a developer platform team is advantageous. Familiarity with observability tools associated with the Elastic Stack in real-world scenarios is welcomed. Open source contributions of any kind are appreciated. Experience supporting production services through an on-call rotation and incident response is also beneficial.
Compensation and Practical Notes
Compensation for this role is provided in the form of a base salary. This position does not include a variable compensation component. At Elastic, the compensation philosophy aims to provide fair, competitive, and transparent remuneration. Salary ranges are established based on a combination of external market benchmarks, internal pay equity considerations, and the responsibilities and complexity associated with the role.
