About the role
You will design and maintain the operating system powering our fitness hardware, working within a flat-hierarchy team in Munich. This role focuses on the full lifecycle of our device software, from initial evaluation and development to deployment and documentation. You will collaborate closely with sports scientists, electrical engineers, and site reliability engineers to ensure the software stack is robust, performant, and aligned with the unique demands of a gym environment. The position requires a proactive mindset, where you are expected to research and implement new frameworks to modernize current system architectures. You will mentor team members and share technical knowledge across the department to elevate the overall competency of the OS and Backend team. A key part of your responsibilities involves managing the Egym Device Operating System lifecycle, including testing, documentation, and deployment to ensure seamless operation in the field. Furthermore, you will participate in service duty rotations to resolve field issues during business hours, providing direct support for our hardware ecosystem. What you'll do
- Manage the Egym Device Operating System lifecycle including testing, documentation, and deployment.
- Build new features and optimize existing systems alongside sports scientists, electrical engineers, and site reliability engineers.
- Develop high-quality software for Linux systems and IoT cloud infrastructure.
- Mentor team members and share technical knowledge across the department.
- Research and implement new frameworks to modernize current system architectures.
- Participate in service duty rotations to resolve field issues during business hours.
- Evaluate and select technologies that align with the long-term vision for our fitness hardware.
- Write clean, maintainable code and enforce high standards for software quality across the team.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues using logs, metrics, and remote debugging techniques.
- Collaborate with backend services to ensure seamless integration between the device OS and cloud platforms.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for both internal developers and end-users.
- Optimize system performance to ensure a responsive and reliable user experience on fitness equipment.
- Assist in defining and refining operational procedures for the deployment and monitoring of IoT devices.
- Act as a technical lead for OS-related initiatives, driving best practices in version control and configuration management.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in Linux systems development, specifically for edge devices like iMX or Raspberry Pi.
- Proficiency in Yocto for creating custom Linux distributions.
- Hands-on coding ability in Rust, C, or C++.
- Scripting skills in Bash and Python.
- Understanding of networking protocols including TCP/IP, VPN, NAT, IPv6, DNS, and DHCP.
- Experience with cloud and backend technologies such as Java, Go, Docker, and Kubernetes.
- Commitment to high-quality standards in documentation, Git commits, and automated testing.
- Ability to work effectively in a flat-hierarchy team, taking ownership of complex technical challenges.
- Strong analytical skills to diagnose issues and implement sustainable solutions for embedded systems.
- Familiarity with the constraints and realities of IoT environments, including limited resources and connectivity issues.
- Willingness to adhere to strict security protocols to protect user data and device integrity.
- Professional communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced setting.
- Reliability and a proactive approach to problem-solving, ensuring minimal downtime for critical fitness hardware.
- Willingness to follow established processes while also contributing ideas for process improvement.
