About the role
You will join DoorDash Labs to build and maintain autonomous delivery robots. This position functions as the primary technical contact for robotic hardware, working across engineering and operations teams to improve vehicle safety and performance. The role demands direct engagement with the physical systems that power autonomous delivery, requiring a hands-on approach to every stage of the robot's existence. You will serve as the definitive expert on the hardware stack, translating operational challenges into engineering solutions. Collaboration is central to this position, as you will work closely with software engineers, field operators, and manufacturing partners. Your work will directly influence the reliability and scalability of DoorDash's robotic fleet in demanding urban environments. What you'll do
- Assume ownership of the autonomous robotic platform as the central subject matter expert, driving decisions for hardware architecture and sensor integration.
- Design, prototype, and install diverse sensors alongside proof-of-concept systems to validate new hardware approaches for delivery robots.
- Orchestrate the complete vehicle lifecycle, guiding each robot from initial assembly through rigorous operational testing and deployment.
- Engineer and maintain sophisticated test benches that rigorously validate electrical, mechanical, software, and embedded systems under various conditions.
- Create clear documentation for assembly procedures and integration workflows to ensure consistency and knowledge transfer across teams.
- Execute detailed root cause analysis to troubleshoot and repair complex hardware, sensors, and computer components when issues arise in the field.
- Scale component validation processes and provisioning strategies to securely and efficiently support the rapid growth of the DoorDash fleet.
- Resolve multifaceted technical problems while steadfastly maintaining the highest standards of safety for robots, pedestrians, and operations.
- Interface directly with cross-functional partners to align hardware capabilities with evolving product requirements and operational needs.
- Evaluate emerging hardware technologies and determine their suitability for integration into the autonomous delivery robot ecosystem.
- Support the development of internal tools that streamline hardware testing, diagnostics, and maintenance for the logistics team.
- Champion best practices for hardware reliability, ensuring that each robot meets stringent performance metrics before hitting the road.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Bring a minimum of 4 years of professional experience working with autonomous hardware and software systems in a relevant capacity.
- Demonstrate hands-on proficiency with autonomous vehicle components such as GPS, LiDAR, RADAR, and a variety of camera systems.
- Show the ability to read, interpret, and act upon complex electrical schematics and detailed technical datasheets with precision.
- Exhibit mastery over cable management, soldering, and crimping techniques to build robust and reliable electrical connections.
- Possess extensive experience with a wide range of shop tools, including welding equipment, metal working tools, CNC machines, machining processes, and 3D printers.
- Apply skill in electromechanical maintenance and the use of advanced diagnostic tools to identify and resolve hardware issues.
- Maintain strong 3D modeling capabilities using industry-standard software such as Onshape or Solidworks, or equivalent CAD platforms.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and quality control measures inherent in the development of autonomous hardware systems.
- Thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift rapidly based on field data and operational demands.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders during collaborative discussions.
- Commit to working a full 5-day schedule on-site in San Francisco to ensure seamless integration with the team and operations.
Nice to have
- Demonstrate proficiency in Linux environments, Python programming, and the Robot Operating System (ROS) to facilitate software-hardware integration.
- Hold experience with microcontrollers or microprocessors used for controlling robotic systems and peripheral devices.
- Show familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, DRONECAN, and UART used in vehicle networks.
- Have experience flashing firmware or deploying software updates directly to hardware components in the field.
- Bring a background in low-volume manufacturing specifically for robotics, drones, or the automotive sectors.
- Possess personal project experience building robots, RC vehicles, or working with Raspberry Pi/Arduino platforms.
Skills & tools
- Expertise in CAD software including Solidworks and Onshape for designing mechanical components and assemblies.
- Deep understanding of electrical schematics and the ability to translate them into physical wiring harnesses.
- Mastery of soldering and crimping skills to create durable and safe electrical connections.
- Experience with CNC operation, machining, and 3D printing for rapid prototyping and custom part fabrication.
- Proficiency in Python, ROS, and Linux-based systems for hardware control and data analysis.
- Knowledge of CAN bus protocols, DRONECAN implementations, and UART communication for system integration.
- Capability in microcontroller programming to develop low-level firmware and interface with sensors and actuators.
