About the role
We are seeking a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to steer the technical vision for artificial intelligence systems within our Clinical team. This role will emphasize the development of advanced healthcare solutions, such as voice-activated assistants and frameworks for evaluating large language models (LLMs). You will be tasked with harmonizing research initiatives with the deployment of production-ready systems in a highly regulated environment.

What you'll do
- Develop a comprehensive technical roadmap for clinical machine learning systems, focusing on both architecture and deployment strategies.
- Spearhead the design and execution of LLM-driven clinical agents for various applications, including summarizing consultations and providing evidence-based recommendations.
- Create evaluation frameworks that utilize real-world clinical data to guarantee the safety and precision of deployed models.
- Construct production-grade infrastructure that encompasses prompt versioning, safety measures, uncertainty quantification, and system observability.
- Provide mentorship to senior engineers and scientists, fostering their professional growth and technical skills.
- Collaborate closely with medical, legal, and compliance teams to ensure that all systems comply with GDPR, MDR, and the EU AI Act.
- Oversee strategic decisions regarding the development of foundational models, weighing the options between building in-house solutions and purchasing existing technologies.
- Engage in cross-functional teamwork to integrate clinical insights into AI solutions, ensuring that the technology meets the needs of healthcare professionals and patients alike.
- Conduct thorough research to stay updated on the latest advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence, applying relevant findings to improve our systems.
- Present technical concepts and project updates to stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding across various departments.
- Participate in the recruitment process by evaluating potential candidates and contributing to building a high-performing team.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in machine learning or artificial intelligence, including at least 3 years in a Staff or Principal role leading initiatives across multiple teams.
- A PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, AI, or a related field, or equivalent research experience.
- Extensive knowledge in at least two of the following areas: clinical natural language processing (NLP), LLM fine-tuning and evaluation, automatic speech recognition, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems, or reinforcement learning.
- Proficiency in programming languages and frameworks such as Python, PyTorch, Transformers, and vLLM, with a proven track record of deploying solutions on cloud platforms like AWS or GCP.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of aligning diverse stakeholders and articulating complex technical decisions clearly.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to overcoming challenges in a dynamic environment.
Nice to have
- Publications in prestigious conferences or journals, such as NeurIPS, ICLR, ACL, or medical informatics.
- Familiarity with European healthcare regulations, including GDPR, MDR, and the EU AI Act.
- Previous experience working with clinical datasets or in healthcare-related applications, providing insights into the unique challenges of the industry.
