About the role
You will define the architecture and strategy for our data platform to support enterprise-level machine learning and business intelligence initiatives across the organization. This role sits within our Data and AI Platform team, where you will build the foundational infrastructure that enables engineers and stakeholders to innovate effectively and scale responsibly. You will own the end-to-end lifecycle of critical data systems, ensuring that our platforms are robust, performant, and aligned with business objectives. The position requires you to analyze complex trade-offs and make informed decisions that balance scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency. You will act as a technical authority, shaping how data infrastructure evolves to meet current and future demands. Collaboration with cross-functional partners will be central to your work, translating high-level requirements into concrete technical specifications. Your contributions will directly impact the reliability and capabilities of the data ecosystem used by the entire company.

What you'll do
Define architectural standards and conduct rigorous cost and impact analysis for major infrastructure decisions that affect the data platform.
Manage multi-region data pipelines at petabyte scale, maintaining 99.9% reliability while implementing advanced monitoring and alerting strategies.
Identify and execute infrastructure cost optimization strategies to improve efficiency and control spending across cloud resources.
Mentor data engineers and lead architecture reviews to promote best practices in security, reliability, and DataOps methodologies.
Evaluate new technologies and frameworks, leading the technical roadmap for platform modernization and innovation.
Design and implement scalable data solutions using infrastructure as code principles with Terraform to ensure consistency and repeatability.
Orchestrate complex data workflows using Airflow or Dagster, ensuring robust error handling, logging, and observability across pipelines.
Leverage BigQuery to build high-performance data models and analytics solutions that support strategic decision-making.
Collaborate closely with security and compliance teams to enforce network and IAM security standards across all data environments.
Champion the adoption of CI/CD practices for data projects to accelerate delivery and improve the quality of data pipelines.
Utilize advanced Python programming skills to develop custom tools, transformations, and integrations that enhance platform capabilities.
Communicate technical concepts and infrastructure decisions clearly to diverse audiences, including both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Monitor platform performance and reliability metrics, driving continuous improvement initiatives and proactive issue resolution.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal tools and frameworks that improve the productivity of data engineering teams.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional experience as a Staff Data Platform Engineer, Staff DataOps, Staff Site Reliability Engineer, or equivalent role with significant infrastructure responsibilities.
- Expertise in Google Cloud Platform services, including core compute, storage, networking, and managed data services.
- Deep proficiency with Kubernetes for container orchestration, including cluster administration and workload management.
- Extensive experience using Terraform to provision and manage cloud infrastructure in a production environment.
- Strong background in network security, including VPC design, firewall rules, and secure architecture patterns.
- Solid understanding of identity and access management (IAM) principles and their application in cloud environments.
- Proficiency in orchestrating data pipelines using Airflow or Dagster, with a strong grasp of scheduling, dependencies, and monitoring.
- Advanced experience working with BigQuery for data warehousing, including query optimization and schema design.
- Advanced Python programming skills, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
- Deep understanding of software development principles, including version control, testing, and modular design.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues in distributed systems and resolve them efficiently.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated experience working at scale, managing systems that handle large volumes of data and traffic.

Experience building and deploying APIs, specifically using FastAPI to create scalable and maintainable interfaces.

Practical experience with FinOps and cloud cost management techniques to optimize resource usage and control expenditures.
