Intermediate Mechanical Engineer
Job description
About the role
Mechanical Engineer, Building Performance
DIALOG is a mission driven design firm dedicated to improving community wellbeing and environmental health through our work. We operate as a multi-disciplinary studio, uniting architects, interior designers, urban planners, and engineers under one collaborative roof. Our team is defined by big ideas, a joyful approach to work, and a shared commitment to shaping vibrant, sustainable places. We seek professionals who are curious, collaborative, and optimistic about the future of the built environment.
We are seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer to join our practice. In this role, you will be responsible for the technical development and delivery of high performance mechanical systems. You will guide projects from initial concept through detailed documentation and construction administration. The position is embedded within integrated project teams working on hospitality, recreation, education, and healthcare sectors. This is an opportunity to mentor colleagues, expand your leadership capabilities, and grow into a senior technical role.
This position is based in Calgary, Alberta, and is a full time engagement. The annual compensation for this role is $96,917.00, with potential variation based on experience.
Responsibilities
You will own the technical strategy for mechanical systems, translating project goals into efficient and resilient building solutions. A primary focus will be coordinating with civil, structural, and other disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery. You will create accurate construction documents, specifications, and detailed schedules that meet building codes and client expectations.
Key duties include developing system layouts and performing sizing calculations to support project needs. You will coordinate schedules and digital models to maintain project timelines and keep stakeholders informed. You will establish testing and balancing protocols to verify system performance and ensure healthy indoor environments for building occupants. Additional responsibilities include preparing documentation for permits, bid packages, and responses to contractor queries.
You will support energy analysis and the implementation of strategies that reduce environmental impact and operational costs. A critical part of the role involves reviewing submittals, shop drawings, and commissioning reports to confirm alignment with project standards. You will partner with facility managers and commissioning agents to ensure a smooth handover and long term reliability of mechanical systems.
Requirements
A degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field is required for this position. Candidates should bring three to five years of experience designing mechanical systems for commercial or institutional buildings. Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD and building analysis software used for system performance modeling is essential.
A strong understanding of heating, cooling, ventilation, and plumbing systems specific to multi-use projects is required. You must be able to produce clear, concise construction documents and communicate technical details effectively to diverse stakeholders. Eligibility to work in Canada without sponsorship is required for this position.
Additional Qualifications
Experience with sustainable design certification systems is preferred and considered a strong asset.
Tools and Skills
Proficiency with AutoCAD is required for success in this role.
