Tech Strategy Director, Compute, Google DeepMind

About the role

This role defines and drives the AI compute strategy and portfolio optimization for Google from a DeepMind vantage point. The hire will own the long range strategic questions that shape how Google invests in and delivers AI compute capacity across the company. They will frame and synthesize complex tradeoffs into clear options for SVP+ leadership and execute on those mandates with cross functional partners. The position is responsible for maximizing product impact and AI value while ensuring that key programs remain accountable and on track. This leader will continuously scan the landscape for emerging experiments and push the envelope on how Google leverages its AI investments. Ultimately, the role drives the strategy that determines the future of AI capability and infrastructure at scale.

What you'll do

Investigate and synthesize Google's most complex long range compute strategy questions while defining the corresponding strategic options.

Create new virtual teams and partner with existing groups to build comprehensive product and policy plans that withstand evolving conditions.

Model scenarios and tradeoffs to develop opinionated strategies that maximize AI value and optimize compute investments across Google.

Create SVP+ forum materials, including presentations, communications, and mandates that clearly articulate strategic direction.

Develop and maintain a per-mandate monitoring view to ensure programs stay accountable to their commitments and milestones.

Collaborate with operational teams and forums across AI to set up company-wide mandates for success, organizing staff and delivery structures.

Stay connected across Google to maintain a living catalog of ongoing experiments and proposed innovations that merit discussion at the NRC.

Identify gaps in processes and information, then propose and implement solutions to strengthen strategic decision making.

Champion the synthesis of complex situations into crisp, data backed options that can be consumed by SVP+ audiences.

Drive flawless execution of compute strategies by partnering deeply with cross functional stakeholders and owners.

Translate evolving business and technical contexts into updated strategies that keep Google at the forefront of AI infrastructure.

Provide thought leadership on compute related product and infrastructure choices that influence product portfolio decisions.

Ensure that strategic initiatives are measurable, monitored, and iterated upon based on outcomes and new information.

Represent DeepMind's Tech Strategy perspective in high visibility forums that shape Google wide AI compute policy.

Requirements

BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in a technical and or business area.

15+ years of product management experience for a technology driven company at scale, including a proven track record in driving 0 to 1 product capabilities and founding or incubating new, high impact technical initiatives.

Exceptional organizational talent running high velocity, high impact, strategic programs across multiple teams and timelines.

Stellar verbal and written communication skills with past experience presenting to SVP and VP+ level audiences.

Extensive experience in product operations and business strategy, including financial modeling and scenario analysis.

Strong analytics, strategy, and data fluency experience to turn complex information into actionable insights.

High energy, positive attitude, and strong tech judgment paired with excellent interpersonal skills for navigating pan Google topics.

Comfort operating with incomplete information while still driving toward timely, high quality decisions.

Proven ability to manage ambiguity, balance competing priorities, and maintain rigor in a fast moving environment.

Experience working closely with AI research, infrastructure, and product teams to align on strategy and execution.

Capacity to synthesize large volumes of information into concise, grounded recommendations for senior leadership.

Track record of ownership and follow through to ensure programs deliver intended outcomes and iterate based on feedback.

Nice to have

Prior experience in AI compute strategy, infrastructure, or product portfolio optimization within Google or a comparable tech company.

Demonstrated success in influencing and aligning senior leaders without direct authority.

Experience with people management or leadership of virtual teams working across locations.

Background in AI research, product, or policy roles that provide deeper context on AI trends and capabilities.
