About the Role
[C]Worthy seeks a specialized software design professional to define the technical backbone of ocean carbon removal quantification. Your core mission involves creating the methods and systems that convert complex ocean data into rigorous, auditable evidence. You will architect data ingestion frameworks, build simulation environments, and ensure that every analysis package released supports transparent decision making. Key Responsibilities
You will design robust intake pipelines that unify observational records from diverse sensors and research vessels. These pipelines will enforce consistent formats, flag anomalies, and prepare data for downstream modeling. You will formulate modeling code that captures the dynamics of the biological pump within specified ocean domains. This code will represent processes such as carbon export, remineralization, and ecosystem interactions.
A central duty involves conducting structured review sessions where simulation outputs are scrutinized against measurement uncertainty. During these sessions, you will assess model integrity, identify discrepancies, and recommend adjustments. You will coordinate the shipping of analysis artifacts to both internal tools and external repositories used by the scientific community. This includes packaging results in formats that support reuse and independent verification.
You will establish partner integrations that align mCDR metrics with established scientific community standards. This work ensures interoperability and consistency across projects. Implementation of data assimilation approaches will merge new observations with historical simulations to improve accuracy over time. You will also maintain detailed documentation trails so that every method and assumption remains traceable across project lifecycles. Supporting validation efforts will involve comparing model output with independent observational networks to confirm reliability.
Required Qualifications
You bring three to five years of experience building software specifically for environmental science applications. This background should include hands-on work with real datasets and iterative development cycles. You hold familiarity with oceanographic observations, modeling frameworks, and data assimilation concepts. Practical knowledge of how these elements interact in marine research settings is essential.
You write tests and documentation that keep project behavior understandable for diverse collaborators. Your code will be reviewed by scientists and engineers with varying levels of software expertise. You communicate clearly with interdisciplinary scientists while managing technical tradeoffs. This includes explaining constraints, risks, and benefits in ways that support informed decision making.
Preferred Experience and Tools
Experience contributing to open source projects that serve research communities is highly valued. Such contributions demonstrate an understanding of collaborative development, version control discipline, and community standards.
Your technical toolkit will include Python, NumPy, xarray, and Dask for scalable data processing. You will use GitHub for version control and collaboration, Docker for environment consistency, and the Linux command line for efficient workflow execution. Familiarity with netCDF for oceanographic data, as well as R or Matlab for analysis, is expected. These tools will support your ability to build reliable, reproducible workflows.
Location and Engagement
The position is based in Boulder, Colorado, within a research environment focused on convergent science. The role is full-time and structured around deep engagement with both technical and scientific challenges. Compensation for this position ranges from $140,000 to $170,000 per year, reflecting the specialized skill set required.
