Backend Software Engineer

About the role

You will own the design and implementation of new features and services within the FACT team, turning the complexity of processing financial transactions across various asset classes into highly scalable, cloud-native services. You will collaborate closely with product and data teams to define API contracts, shape system architecture, and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of critical reference data that powers Clear Street's platform. This role requires you to balance tradeoffs in distributed systems, mentor engineers, and evolve technical standards that drive our culture of system designs. You will act as a voice of experience, solving non-trivial problems while flexing system design muscles and delivering clean, efficient code. As a key contributor to our data products, you will help build the services that make security master, pricing, and streaming market data reliable for every sophisticated investor. Your work will directly support Clear Street's mission to provide technology, tools, and service once reserved for the largest institutions.

What you'll do

Design and implement new services and features for the FACT team's data products, including security master, corporate actions, and streaming market data.

Architect flexible APIs using Go, gRPC, and Python to support a microservice architecture that reliably delivers consistent reference data at scale.

Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate complex business requirements into robust backend solutions that handle massive volumes of financial data.

Contribute to systems that collect inputs from vendors, public sources, and internal teams, organizing them into cohesive and authoritative datasets.

Leverage strategic caching and robust signaling patterns to build responsive data access services that meet strict accuracy and timeliness requirements.

Operate and optimize core technologies such as PostgreSQL, Snowflake, Kafka, and Redis within a Docker and Kubernetes environment.

Work within a distributed systems landscape to solve non-trivial problems involving scale, data integrity, and system reliability.

Mentor teammates, define engineering standards, and drive a system design approach that aligns with Clear Street's culture of collaboration and excellence.

Translate intricate financial transaction flows into clean, maintainable code that supports transparent and efficient client interactions with markets.

Support the delivery of technology and tools that empower sophisticated investors to access every asset, in every market, through a unified platform.

Implement solutions that balance tradeoffs between performance, scalability, and maintainability in a fast-paced, high-quality engineering environment.

Participate in on-call responsibilities to ensure service reliability and rapid response to production incidents affecting critical data feeds.

Champion best practices in API design, testing, and documentation to ensure services are maintainable and extensible over time.

Engage with the broader Clear Street community to share knowledge, improve processes, and further the platform's transformation of investor-market interactions.

Requirements

You have at least eight (8) years of professional experience implementing highly scalable services, with a strong focus on Golang for backend development.

You demonstrate confidence in designing and building flexible APIs that enable microservice architectures to reliably deliver consistent data under load.

You have contributed to systems that handle massive amounts of data and complex business problems, showing comfort with scale, distributed systems, and associated technologies.

You possess a strong command of object-oriented design patterns, data structures, and algorithms to craft efficient and maintainable solutions.

You communicate technical ideas with ease, emphasizing collaboration to deliver high quality products that meet client expectations.

Your experience positions you to mentor team members, define engineering standards, and drive a disciplined system design approach for new services.

You have experience with cloud-native practices, including containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes.

You are comfortable working with databases and data streaming technologies such as PostgreSQL, Snowflake, and Kafka to build reliable data pipelines.

Nice to have

Familiarity with financial market data, reference data, and corporate actions processing within capital markets systems.

Experience contributing to or building platforms that serve sophisticated investors and institutional workflows.

Hands-on experience with Redis for caching and signaling patterns in high-throughput systems.

Exposure to Clear Street's mission of providing every sophisticated investor access to every asset through a unified, modern platform.

Practical notes

Full-time role located in New York, NY.

Employment is full-time and based in the office, with a requirement to be present four days per week.
