Athena Architect

About the role

Chartis is seeking an Athena Architect with a focused mission on Athena data architecture and OMOP Common Data Model (CDM) mapping. In this role, you will own the end-to-end design, transformation, and alignment of Athena data to enable advanced analytics and reporting. You will act as the primary technical authority for structuring clinical and revenue cycle data within the OMOP framework. Your work will ensure that complex healthcare data is standardized, governed, and optimized for actionable insights. You will translate ambiguous business questions into robust, scalable data models. This position is critical in bridging the gap between raw healthcare data and strategic decision-making. Your contributions will directly support clients in making US healthcare more affordable, accessible, safe, and human.

What you'll do

• Lead the architectural design and modeling of Athena data structures to support evolving analytics requirements.
• Drive the mapping and transformation of disparate Athena data elements into the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM) for consistency and interoperability.
• Collaborate with clinical, revenue cycle, and analytics stakeholders to translate business needs into precise data specifications.
• Design and implement efficient ETL/ELT pipelines that standardize, validate, and load data into OMOP-compliant schemas.
• Ensure data quality, integrity, and consistency across complex clinical and financial datasets through rigorous testing and validation.
• Translate intricate healthcare workflows from both clinical and revenue cycle domains into scalable, logical data models.
• Provide deep expertise in healthcare data standards, vocabularies, and terminologies such as SNOMED, ICD, and CPT to guide correct implementations.
• Partner closely with data engineers, analysts, and BI teams to enable seamless downstream reporting and analytics consumption.
• Document detailed data mappings, lineage diagrams, and architecture decisions to support governance, compliance, and future maintenance.
• Support the performance tuning and optimization of large-scale healthcare datasets to ensure timely and efficient query execution.
• Evaluate emerging healthcare data standards and assess their applicability within the OMOP framework and broader analytics ecosystem.
• Act as a subject matter expert to advise on best practices for data modeling, data governance, and regulatory compliance.
• Contribute to the development of reusable components and patterns that enhance efficiency across multiple projects and clients.
• Guide junior team members by providing technical mentorship and clear communication of complex data architecture concepts.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in healthcare data architecture or data engineering focused on healthcare environments.
• Deep hands-on experience with Athena (athenahealth) data models, data extracts, and associated data structures.
• Proven experience implementing, supporting, or contributing to the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM) in production or near-production settings.
• Strong experience in data mapping, transformation, and normalization techniques applied to complex healthcare datasets.
• Proficiency in SQL and advanced query writing for complex analytical and operational scenarios.
• Experience with ETL/ELT tools and frameworks such as Informatica, dbt, Talend, or Azure Data Factory is required.
• Solid understanding of clinical data from electronic health records (EHR) and revenue cycle management (RCM) workflows.
• Experience working with healthcare data standards, terminologies, and interoperability frameworks is essential.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to deconstruct complex problems and design coherent data solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment with strong written communication skills.
• Commitment to maintaining data security, privacy, and compliance considerations in all data architecture decisions.
• Willingness to engage with stakeholders at multiple levels to clarify requirements and align on technical approaches.
• Understanding of data governance principles and the importance of maintaining robust documentation practices.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality results in a dynamic, client-focused consulting environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with the OHDSI tools and ecosystem, including hands-on work with ATLAS or related analytical platforms.
• Familiarity with FHIR, HL7, or other interoperability standards and how they relate to data integration efforts.
• Experience with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for deploying and managing data solutions.
• Background in healthcare analytics, reporting environments, or business intelligence implementations within client organizations.
• Exposure to value-based care models, population health analytics, and related healthcare reimbursement frameworks.

This is a part_time role. Remote work is allowed in alignment with Chartis policies. There may be travel requirements depending on client needs, and visa sponsorship is not indicated.
