About the role

CarGurus is establishing a new engineering hub in Dublin and is seeking a senior-level developer to help build the team culture. In this role, you will be instrumental in defining the technical foundation for our UK and Canadian market initiatives, taking ownership of dealer-facing tools from conception to launch. You will manage the complete development lifecycle, ensuring that your solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with business objectives. This position requires a proactive mindset, as you will diagnose complex issues and architect resilient systems that enhance the dealer experience. You will work closely with product managers to translate market-specific requirements into technical solutions. Furthermore, you will be expected to contribute to the broader engineering strategy and mentor emerging talent within the new Dublin office. Your work will directly impact how dealers interact with our platform across international markets.

What you'll do

• Architect and maintain full-stack features and APIs using Java, React, and TypeScript to support international dealer operations.
• Partner with product managers and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions for the UK and Canadian markets.
• Contribute to technical strategy by participating in design reviews and architectural planning sessions for new initiatives.
• Manage services comprehensively, overseeing their journey from initial concept through to production deployment and ongoing maintenance.
• Ensure high availability, security, and performance by enforcing rigorous code quality standards and implementing comprehensive testing practices.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues efficiently by leveraging system observability tools and analytical problem-solving skills.
• Provide mentorship to junior staff and help define engineering standards, processes, and best practices for the new Dublin office.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate business needs into technical specifications that guide development efforts.
• Optimize application performance and scalability to handle diverse workloads across different international markets.
• Implement and maintain integrations with third-party services and APIs to enable seamless dealer interactions and data exchange.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code that adheres to industry best practices and organizational standards.
• Support the deployment pipeline and infrastructure as needed to ensure smooth and reliable application releases.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering with a strong track record of delivering production-grade applications.
• Proficiency in Java, including frameworks like Spring Boot or Hibernate, demonstrating a deep understanding of object-oriented principles.
• Production experience building responsive user interfaces with React and TypeScript, showcasing your ability to create dynamic user experiences.
• Background in designing RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed systems, with an understanding of scalability and reliability challenges.
• Experience with GraphQL to enable flexible and efficient data querying for complex dealer-facing applications.
• Working knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, caching strategies, and data structures to optimize data access and performance.
• Familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, including relevant services for building and deploying applications.
• Experience with containerization tools like Docker or Kubernetes to manage application deployment and scaling effectively.
• Understanding of CI/CD, automated testing, and production monitoring to ensure software quality and operational stability.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex issues in a distributed system environment.
• Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders across different regions.
• Self-motivated with the ability to manage priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with server-side TypeScript, specifically Remix, Next.js, or Express, to enhance backend capabilities and API development.
