Senior Product Designer
Job description
About the role
Careem is on the lookout for a Senior Product Designer who will take charge of the advancement of its design system. This position emphasizes the integration of artificial intelligence to enrich the design system for designers, engineers, and AI agents alike. Your contributions will be vital in ensuring design consistency across Careem's diverse super app offerings.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Oversee the complete lifecycle of design system components, including tokens, elements, and patterns, from their inception to eventual deprecation.
- Set and uphold design guidelines for color schemes, typography, spacing, and user interactions across multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, and web, while accommodating right-to-left Arabic text.
- Define ownership and responsibilities by maintaining a well-structured token architecture.
- Develop and revise thorough documentation to provide consistent guidance for all components.
- Advocate for accessibility standards (WCAG) within the design system and manage related tasks in collaboration with product and engineering teams.
- Organize design tokens and components to facilitate AI agents in generating on-system designs from code or prompts.
- Create and sustain Code Connect mappings, MCP integrations, and organized component metadata.
- Utilize AI-driven audits and linting processes to identify off-system usage and token discrepancies prior to deployment.
- Employ AI to validate and version documentation in tandem with its associated components.
- Design Figma plugins and agent workflows to streamline repetitive tasks for the design team.
- Articulate the advantages of the design system in terms of efficiency and quality to a range of stakeholders, from individual contributors to executive leadership.
- Coordinate design system guilds and critiques, synthesizing feedback from various product verticals to prioritize enhancements.
- Boost the organization's AI capabilities through workshops and the creation of training materials.
- Collaborate closely with engineering teams to convert design patterns into deployable components, ensuring technical viability.
- Make informed decisions to avoid component bloat, such as maintaining distinct architectures when merging variants would lead to unnecessary complexity.
- Engage with stakeholders to ensure that design system objectives align with the broader product strategy.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in product design.
- At least 3 years of focused experience working with design systems at scale, ideally within multi-brand or super-app contexts.
- Deep understanding of variables, token architecture, component APIs, library management, and version control.
- Proven track record of developing real workflows utilizing large language models (LLMs) and agentic tools, including Figma Plugin API, MCP-based integrations, or prompt design.
- Proficiency in prototyping with JavaScript/TypeScript, JSON, and managing design token pipelines.
- Ability to distinguish between semantic intent and coincidental value, managing complexity through unification.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Nice to have
- Experience with right-to-left (RTL) or Arabic-first products, or familiarity with the Middle Eastern market.
- Background in production design-to-code pipelines, such as Code Connect or token transformation processes.
- Active participation in the AI and design community through open-source contributions, speaking engagements, or writing.
