About the role
The Blockchain Risk Control Research Intern position at Bybit is a specialized role focused on the intersection of cybersecurity, financial crime investigation, and distributed ledger technology. This internship places you at the forefront of protecting the digital asset ecosystem by engaging in advanced research and analysis of blockchain data. Your primary mission will be to identify, investigate, and help mitigate illicit activities occurring on blockchain networks. This involves a deep analytical process where you will scrutinize blockchain protocols and smart contracts to uncover security weaknesses, code vulnerabilities, and architectural flaws that could be exploited by malicious actors. You will be tasked with improving Bybit's risk control systems by contributing to the development of more robust detection mechanisms. You will own the entire process of analyzing complex, high-volume data sets, translating highly technical and often abstract findings into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders across the organization. What you'll do
Your daily responsibilities will revolve around active investigation and data-driven analysis. Specifically, you will examine blockchain transaction data meticulously to detect unusual patterns and anomalies that deviate from standard behavior. This will involve conducting detailed forensic investigations into cryptocurrency-related crimes, including but not limited to theft, fraud, and sophisticated market manipulation schemes. A core part of your contribution will be studying security vulnerabilities inherent in blockchain protocols and smart contracts, analyzing code for exploits and logical errors. You will be expected to produce high-quality outputs, including detailed research reports and academic papers that document your findings and methodologies. To be effective, you will work closely with engineering teams to enhance data collection frameworks and improve threat detection capabilities in real-time. During security incidents, you will coordinate with both internal and external parties to ensure a swift and effective response. Additional key duties include analyzing historical data to identify long-term trends and indicators of compromise, as well as assisting in the development of new methodologies for tracking illicit fund flows across complex transaction networks. You will also evaluate the effectiveness of existing risk control frameworks and suggest data-backed improvements. To support this, you will perform manual and automated queries to extract relevant data points from massive datasets, meticulously document all processes and findings to create reusable resources for the team, and support the creation of visualizations to communicate complex data patterns clearly to non-technical audiences. You will rigorously test hypotheses related to the behavior of malicious actors on the blockchain to stay ahead of emerging threats.
Requirements
To be considered for this internship, you must possess a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Blockchain Security, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related academic discipline that provides a strong theoretical and practical foundation. A demonstrated history of high-quality publications in reputable industry or academic conferences is essential to prove your analytical and research capabilities. You must exhibit proficiency in programming languages such as SQL, Python, or JavaScript to effectively manipulate data and build analysis scripts. Practical, hands-on experience with blockchain monitoring or forensic analysis tools is a strict prerequisite for this role. Furthermore, you must possess comprehensive knowledge of blockchain technology, including a deep understanding of protocols, smart contracts, consensus mechanisms, and cryptography. These technical skills must be complemented by strong communication and teamwork skills, as you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Additionally, the role requires the ability to understand and interpret complex technical documentation with a high degree of accuracy.
