(Senior) Backend Engineer
Job description
About the role
Bunch is constructing the foundational infrastructure for the next generation of private markets, targeting a sector heading toward $32 trillion in Assets Under Management. As a (Senior) Backend Engineer, you will sit at the core of the Product Development team, designing and implementing scalable, secure services that replace fragmented manual workflows with an integrated, AI-powered platform. The position offers significant autonomy to influence the technical roadmap and product strategy, requiring an entrepreneurial mindset where ownership extends beyond writing code to solving complex regulatory and financial problems. You will operate within a diverse, high-performing team of over 120 professionals from 40+ countries, following a recent $35M Series B close in May 2026 and a 4x ARR growth trajectory in 2025.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, and secure backend services using Node.js and the Nest.js framework to address genuine customer pain points in fund operations.
- Partner directly with Product Managers during the discovery phase, leveraging deep technical expertise to shape viable solutions and actively influence the product roadmap rather than simply executing tickets.
- Coordinate closely with cross-functional squads - including design, operations, and regulatory experts - to ensure seamless delivery of new features and iterative improvements across the fund lifecycle.
- Proactively identify and refactor technical debt to maximize long-term team velocity, establishing patterns that enhance code maintainability and system reliability.
- Champion engineering best practices by improving collaboration standards, communication protocols, and code review processes to elevate overall team output.
- Design and optimize database schemas and queries within MySQL, ensuring data integrity and performance under the strict requirements of highly regulated financial environments.
- Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines via GitHub Actions to support rapid, safe deployment cycles to the Kubernetes infrastructure hosted on AWS.
- Integrate and manage third-party service dependencies such as FusionAuth for authentication, Retool for internal tooling, Twilio and SendGrid for communications, and Tally for dynamic form generation.
- Contribute to system design discussions focusing on scalability, latency reduction, and resilience patterns suitable for handling sensitive financial data and document processing workflows.
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response procedures to guarantee high availability and security compliance for the platform's 150+ fund managers and 12,000+ LPs.
- Mentor junior engineers through pair programming, architectural reviews, and knowledge-sharing sessions to foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and architectural patterns - such as the ongoing migration from Svelte to React on the frontend - to inform strategic technical decisions that reduce complexity.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience building and operating production-grade backend systems in fast-paced, agile environments, preferably within startups or scale-ups.
- Deep proficiency in TypeScript (or an equivalent strongly typed language such as Java or C#) with extensive hands-on experience using Nest.js, Spring Boot, or similar dependency-injection frameworks.
- Strong command of relational database design and optimization, specifically with MySQL, including indexing strategies, transaction management, and query tuning.
- Solid grasp of distributed system design principles, including microservices architecture, API design (REST/gRPC), caching strategies, and horizontal scaling patterns on Kubernetes.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with non-technical stakeholders, translating complex technical constraints into clear product trade-offs during discovery and planning.
- Proven track record of taking end-to-end ownership of features - from initial concept and architectural design through deployment, monitoring, and post-launch iteration.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to articulate technical decisions clearly in a diverse, multicultural team setting.
- High degree of self-awareness, accountability, and a strong work ethic aligned with a culture that values quality standards and collaborative problem-solving.
Nice to have
- Prior experience building software for fintech, wealth management, or other highly regulated industries where compliance, audit trails, and data privacy are paramount.
- Familiarity with document processing pipelines, OCR technologies, or AI/ML model integration for automating unstructured financial data extraction.
- Practical knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Pulumi) and advanced Kubernetes operations (Operators, Helm, Service Mesh) on AWS.
- Experience with event-driven architectures using message brokers like Kafka, NATS, or RabbitMQ for asynchronous workflow processing.
- Contributions to open-source projects or active participation in the TypeScript/Nest.js community.
- German language proficiency (conversational or business level) to facilitate deeper integration with the local Berlin office culture and regulatory landscape.
Skills & tools
TypeScript, Node.js, Nest.js, MySQL, Kubernetes (K8s), AWS, GitHub Actions, CI/CD, FusionAuth, Retool, Twilio, SendGrid, Tally, Svelte, React, System Design, Microservices, REST APIs, SQL, Distributed Systems, Fintech, RegTech.
Practical notes
- The interview process consists of five stages: a 20-minute screening with the People team; a 60-minute Hiring Manager interview focusing on values, culture, and product mindset; a 60-minute Technical Interview with two engineers involving collaborative problem-solving and algorithm discussion; a 45-minute conversation with the VP of Engineering regarding vision and ways of working; and an optional 30-minute Meet-and-Greet with future cross-functional teammates.
- The role follows a hybrid model requiring 3 days per week in the Berlin office, with flexibility for up to 4 fully remote working weeks per calendar year.
- Visa sponsorship and relocation support are typically available for qualified candidates relocating to Germany, given the company's international composition (40+ nationalities).
- The tech stack is intentionally kept lean: TypeScript across the stack (Backend: Nest.js; Frontend: migrating Svelte to React), MySQL for persistence, and K8s on AWS for orchestration.
- Bunch emphasizes a "customizable benefits package" allowing allocation toward wellbeing, sport, mobility, or food, alongside 28 days base vacation plus 2 company-wide days off.
- The company recently closed a $35M Series B (May 2026), reported 4x ARR growth in 2025, and serves 150+ fund managers and 12,000+ LPs, indicating a high-growth, post-product-market-fit stage.
