Product Data Analyst
Job description
About the role
You interpret signals for growth and own metrics from question to decision while translating your findings for nontechnical partners. You work closely with product, engineering, marketing, finance, and sales to shape what gets built next and influence strategic direction. You act as a data translator, turning complex analytical outputs into clear narratives that drive consensus and action. You are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the product analytics ecosystem and ensuring that data quality supports high-stakes decisions. You explore user behavior deeply to uncover meaningful patterns that might otherwise remain hidden in reports. You challenge assumptions by validating insights against real user problems gathered through customer research and feedback loops. You continuously refine your analytical approach by embracing feedback, mentorship, and ongoing learning in a fast-paced environment. You contribute directly to the experimentation culture that defines how Buildkite optimizes its platform for developers and teams.
Key facts
What you'll do
Chart onboarding and engagement metrics in collaboration with product managers, defining clear success criteria and instrumentation for controlled experiments.
Design and analyse A/B tests and feature experiments, guiding hypothesis formulation through to data driven recommendation and rollout decisions.
Analyse product analytics platforms such as Posthog, Mixpanel, or Google Analytics to reveal adoption patterns, anomalies, and behavioral insights.
Maintain dashboards and reports that deliver reliable, clear visibility into product health and user behaviour for both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Craft SQL queries across large datasets to answer specific product questions around conversion, retention, funnel performance, and user journeys.
Translate analytical findings into clear narratives and actionable recommendations tailored for diverse audiences inside Buildkite.
Collaborate with engineering to verify event tracking and data pipelines, ensuring instrumentation remains complete, consistent, and accurate over time.
Identify trends and opportunities in product data that traditional reviews might overlook, informing future experimentation and product roadmaps.
Engage in customer research and feedback loops to clarify product needs and validate insights against real user problems and behaviors.
Continuously improve your technical skills and knowledge, exploring tools such as dbt, Snowflake, and modern query engines to enhance your analysis.
Requirements
You bring 2-4 years of experience in data analyst or product analyst roles, ideally within a SaaS environment where metrics drive decisions.
You communicate with empathy and kindness, navigating distributed, remote-first teamwork while respecting diverse collaborators across time zones and cultures.
You understand technical trade-offs and are willing to learn from peers when making data driven decisions that impact product outcomes.
You are comfortable working with familiar tools like Metabase, Looker, or Tableau for visualization, exploration, and stakeholder reporting.
You possess a growth mindset, embracing feedback, mentorship, and ongoing learning to refine your analytical approach and expand your impact.
You are comfortable working in a remote first environment, managing your schedule and output without direct oversight while maintaining accountability.
You have familiarity with modern development workflows, CI/CD concepts, and developer tooling to align effectively with engineering practices and expectations.
You grasp product analytics concepts such as funnels, retention, LTV, activation, churn, and engagement metrics deeply and can explain them to others.
You understand experimentation methodology, including statistical significance, confidence intervals, and sound experiment design to support credible conclusions.
You feel genuine curiosity about user behaviour, seeking why actions occur rather than only what actions happened, and digging into underlying motivations.
You are comfortable writing complex SQL queries across large datasets to surface reliable insights that influence product strategy.
You value clear communication, turning complex analysis into narratives that guide action for both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Experience with Python, R, and Jupyter notebooks for analysis, data manipulation, and more advanced statistical exploration.
Experience with AI for data analytics and designing machine learning model training workflows that can enhance insight generation.
Familiarity with data warehouse environments such as Athena, Clickhouse, dbt, Iceberg, Snowflake, or Databricks for scalable analysis and transformation.
